"Updating Executable" strange STEAMSTART file in folder
Maybe someone can use this for troubleshooting.
I'm busy already 3 days troubleshooting and try all different solutions on this forums and on Reddit and 2K.

This is for both Civ V, Civ BE and XCOM.

What I find out so far and what I think is unusual compared to the other 1500+ games in my library:

- When installing on a new desktop the games (and 2K launcher) not installed before clicking PLAY in Steam doesn't create a games folder in Documents>My Games.

- There is an installscript.vdf file in the Steam common game directory that should instruct what to install. This is actually the moment the 'Updating Executable' message is there. The content of the installscript is:

"installscript"
{
"registry"
{
"hkey_local_machine\\software\\microsoft\\windows\\currentversion\\uninstall\\steam app 8930"
{
"string"
{
"installlocation" "%INSTALLDIR%"
"displayname" "Sid Meier's Civilization V"
"publisher" "2K Games, Inc."
"version" "1.0"
}
"dword"
{
"nomodify" "1"
"norepair" "1"
"versionmajor" "1"
"versionminor" "0"
"majorversion" "1"
"minorversion" "0"
}
}
}
"Run Process"
{
"visual c++ 2008 sp1 redistributable package (x86)"
{
"process 1" "%INSTALLDIR%\\VCRedist\\vcredist_x86.exe"
"command 1" "/q:a"
"description" "Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)"
"nocleanup" "1"
"ignoreexitcode" "1"
}
"directx 9"
{
"process 1" "%INSTALLDIR%\\DirectX\\DXSetup.exe"
"command 1" "/silent"
"description" "DirectX 9"
"nocleanup" "1"
"ignoreexitcode" "1"
}
"directx 11"
{
"process 1" "%INSTALLDIR%\\DirectX\\D3D11Install.exe"
"command 1" "/quiet"
"description" "DirectX 11"
"nocleanup" "1"
"ignoreexitcode" "1"
}
}
}
"kvsignatures"
{
"installscript" "9b1d7435a0649b935eeb4213c3f4d515f2384adb2b4e7e8aebf43e4507ac7d352b974dc0b5a59fedf0ab407c769c74a0b758ff52f1e15820deb4dd143007670becb45e1831ce9dfeed5d8f9b923c05c1ddb76555b9bcf363e15d75ab9591804565c6ef452a4c5b6a75ac5a9a2d43b1bf4ada8ee8778fd3f27c0dc41e17b11a39"
}

- If you click the launcher or one of the Civ 5 exe files (with admin rights) directly there are some files showing up in the gamefolder with the name STEAMSTART file in it. I don't know what this is and I did not see it before in other games.

- Steam is not communicating with the MOD folder on the desktop Civ 5 was installed previously. The mods I unsubscribed from are still in the My Games folder.

- In Steam the name of the game is Civilization V, the My Games folder is Civilization 5 (don't know if that does matter).

Does anybody know if Steam or 2K are actually trying to fix this or have we been dumped.

Today I received this message from official 2K support:

Hey there,

Thank you for actively trying out all the troubleshooting and letting me know that!

I would like to let you know that I just heard from the development team that they have been notified of this issue and are currently working toward a solution.

However, we do not have visibility on their progress, and therefore don't have a timeline on when a fix will be implemented.

As soon as that information is available, our players will be the first to know - I suggest that you keep an eye on our @2KSupport Twitter pages for any updates.

If you have any other questions, please let me know!
