How to get Desktop Shortcut to Launch in DX11?
So I read on 2K's website that you can change the properties from the library in Steam to launch Civ 5 in DX11 rather than DX9, but is there any way that I can get the desktop shortcut to default to DX11, or am I going to have to open up my library every time I want to play Civ 5?

Tried going into the game's files and launching the version labeled DX11 from in the folder, but that still launches the game in DX9 as well.

I seem to be having this same issue. My settings keep getting reset. Very annoying.

Well if you launch it in DX11, your settings won't get reset. I was noticing that problem too, but that's because the shortcut launches in DX9, and DX9 apparently can't remember what the user tells it to do with the settings. Derp.

If you’re not seeing the options while launching from Steam and want to change your preferred version, this can be adjusted in the game’s Properties menu on the general tab. Either right click on the game in Steam or select the gear on the game’s library page in Steam and select “Properties” and you will be able to make the changes right there. Now you should be all set!

I have it set to DX11. No matter what I do it keeps resetting.

Steam has no way (currently) to launch any other option than the top one, when using a desktop icon.

However, you can use the old way to circumvent the launcher, to launch directly into a specific executable. In Windows, take the following steps:
  1. Open your Steam Library
  2. Right click on Civilization V
  3. Point to 'Manage' and click 'Browse local files' in the pop-out menu
  4. Find the executable for the DX-version you want (in Civ6 this is in Base/Binairies/Win64Steam)
  5. Right click the correct executable, the filename will help you identify the one you want, and select 'Copy-as-path'
  6. Back to the Steam library and right click Civilization V again
  7. Click 'Properties...'
  8. In that screen (it should be on the 'General' tab), the last option is for Launch Options. In the text bar there, click once and then hit CTRL+V (or right-click and select paste).
  9. Make sure your cursor is at the end of what you just pasted and type
    %command%
    (space) and then %command%
  10. Click the cross at the top right to close the panel
  11. Voila! Profit! From now on your desktop icon and hitting play in the library or tray-icon will launch that specific executable every time.

Between points 5 and 6 make no sense. After you "copy as path" you say "Make sure your cursor is at the end of what you just pasted" I didn't paste anything but "copy as path". Sorry but I'm lost.

You're right, I misplaced that step, it has to be after step (now) 8 (9 in your quote). I edited my post.
Thanks donald23, I had the same issue and your solution works perfectly.

This worked, thank you!
Only thing is "Copy-as-path" was not an option when right clicking the executable in Step 5. Maybe it's a Windows 10 thing. Instead, I created a shortcut to it, opened the shortcut properties and copied the path from there.

Didn't work for Win10 , there is no "Copy-as-path", just "Copy".

For Win 10 it only needs a slight adjustment:

that's right, it does. but WHY?

I'm not asking you, I'm asking 2K, whose embarrassing launcher first needed to be bypassed for years and years, then it was removed because it was useless, now their desktop shortcut doesn't work.

super job, 2K! doin' great!
