Stuck on "Updating Executable" - W11
Game doesnt start. I have tried to reinstall the game, verify game files, restart steam, restart computer, open steam as admin and nothing works. It just stucks at Updating Executable and doesnt launch. I have also tried setting game files and documents non-read only, tough they just reset back to readonly. Also tired Windows 8 compatibility mode for the 3 exe files. These are the common solutions i have read from this forums but nothing ever works :(

Friend, as I understand you. I missed the game, I installed it - it doesn't work. I read the forum, tried almost everything - it doesn't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ work. The ♥♥♥♥ knows what to do. Only I'm on windows 10.

I love this game. I've played it for hundreds of hours and have to ♥♥♥♥ to get it running after all this time. This is frustrating, especially because it never started.

It's not the game ! ... Been playing Civ5 many thousands of hours, formerly on Win10, now on Win11 ... Played as recently as 3 days ago with no problem as described in this thread.
No idea what could cause this ?

When I do encounter problems, it has been due to MOD conflicts. However, I don't know how that could affect Executable Updates ? :Diplomat:

Also had this problem, i opened the folder and ran the launcher and it kinda worked? I also closed epic games but idk if that helped at all

The same. Yesterday Civilization 5 stopped launching. Everything worked the day before yesterday.
Now when I try to launch it, I get:
updating executable
launching
after which the game launch is interrupted. Even the bootloader doesn't launch from Steam; if I launch the bootloader from the game folder, the game still doesn't launch from it.
I tried checking and restoring the integrity of the files, restarting the game, running the game in compatibility mode and with administrator rights. Nothing helped.
The problem occurs on both of my computers, one has Windows 10, the other has 11.

Bought the complete edition yesterday. Was eager to get into Civ V, only to have the same problem as all of you. I'm on Windows 11, tried reinstalling, verifying files, launching from the folder, updating drivers. Nothing works and it seems like i've wasted my money.
Guys, there is a strange way to start the game, you have to delete all the exe files of the game, click the play button in the steam and when you have the launcher restore the files, and thus the game starts

Renamed the exe files, added a digit at the end of each. The launcher started on the 3rd attempt. I'm shocked.
I had the same issue as the thread starter on my win11pro, for me it worked just to wait for like two hours (I played a different game meanwhile). And then the game was ready to play. Just being patient might help.
I play this game Saturday, and now I'm having the same headache. I did a fresh Windows 10 installation, updated directx, update .NET, updated visual runtimes, and this is the latest version of Windows 10. "Updating executable" and then nothing. Tried file verification, no issues, tried all the executable's and compatibility options- nothing. The Launchpad.exe doesn't start either, nor are config or user data files being created in "My Documents." Prior to this Civ 5 always worked, as in every time it launched it would bring up the crappy new launcher that they use for Civ 6 as well and then you could pick Directx 9, 10, etc.. now absolutely nothing seems to be working. Something is interrupting the executable before it can even start. I wonder if Windows 10 or 11 snuck in an update that is messing with the launcher.

Huh, it worked. Thanks!

The exact setps I followed:
1. Right click on Civ 5 in Steam, select "Manage" -> "Browse local files".
2. Delete "CivilizationV.exe", "CivilizationV_DX11.exe", "CivilizationV_Tablet.exe".
3. Click "Play" on Steam.
4. Wait for 2K Launcher window to appear.
5. Go to "Recycle Bin", restore deleted .exe files.
6. Click "PLAY" in 2K Launcher.
7. The game should start normally.
