Me too. Civ 3(?) I think it was, I used to build cities right next to each other, to create a canal of sorts spanning a wide isthmus. At least once 4 cities wide.

That kind of mod needs to be a DLL mod (modifying the source code), not just simple XML/lua mod. There has been at least one. Look for Passable Forts in WHoward's Pick'N'Mix Mods[www.picknmixmods.com]. It makes forts passable by boats (=canals). You need to install Passable Forts, the DLL mod and configure it properly. I used that DLL mod years ago, but eventually stopped using it as there were some random crashes.

Funny you should mention this. I have been using In Game Editor for a while now, and I only recently realized I could remove ice and even land, creating canals for my navy to pass. It doesn't get into having workers create a verified improvement, but if you find yourself stuck in the ice, or your first settler happened to be right near a narrow land mass, it is nice for the quick job. Along a similar line, you can also create hills where there was ocean, in case you want a protected harbor with an offshore fort or citadel.

Vox Populi lets you essentially build canals with forts/citadels/cities, although the tiles will only be passable to ships if they border some actual water, be it lake or coast.

There was a canal mod called "Like Moses" but it was taken down.
