how do I deal with lots of unhappiness
I'm playing a game where I have like 24 unhappiness and now feasible way of reducing (as far as I know) it any time soon, I am at war with basically the entire world. The -40% attack is not affecting me much but I need to reduce unhappiness to prevent my cities from defecting I guess? How do I bring down unhappiness? I have constructed every happiness increasing building in my non-puppet cities. No one is willing to trade me with me. Any ideas of what I could do to mitigate this?

If you are are capturing cities, keep them as puppets rather than annex them as this causes far less unhappiness. If you have captured a particularly large city, you could also annex it once the civil unrest has stopped, buy a courthouse and any other happiness buildings at the same time, and raze it until happiness stops going up. Keep an eye on it though so to don't raze it totally away. Consider giving some of your captured cities to another player if they aren't strategically important. If you have open borders for this city and your enemies don't, it's a nice place to shoot at him in safety if circumstances allow. Make sure workers improve any pillaged tiles that give you happiness, religion and culture that lead to happiness buffs. Look at allying with a city state that has a luxury resource you don't have if you have enough gold. Consider less than favourable trades with other players for luxury resources you don't have. Look to your culture and Religion for happiness buffs and plan accordingly. Autocracy has some great happiness buffs. Temples and military buildings can provide happiness with the right buffs. Get pagodas if you can. You can also take a break from the war to regroup and let happiness improve. Turns where you are not fighting go much faster so happiness improvements you are doing come pretty quick. Good luck!

Won't help with a game in progress but for next game you have the option of mods that increase happiness (for everyone) - sometimes you just do not want to deal with it.

Disable happiness with advanced setup. Happiness sucks.

Modded ? There is no Happiness toggle in vanilla or any mod I use - at least I have never seen one.

It's an option while setting up your game. My cities are always unhappy since I only play to conquer other cities. There can be no peace.

This is hard to say without specifics. Sometime you can finagle happiness out of swapping around what tiles are worked and what specialist slots are filled.
