unit maintenance
building maitenance
tile improvement maintenance
lack of profitable trade routes
poor city management

all of them combined can seriously impact your gpt

EDIT:
you have couple options:

re-assign your citizens
rewire trade routes to richer city states / civilizations
sell some buildings you dont need
spam trade posts and get tech that has stock exchange

A lot of people don't realise the importance of Cargo Ships (I certainly didn't in my first 100 hours). You want to have all of your trade routes being used up, and preferably them going from your capital these will provide a load of gold, to sustain your armies.
I just trade resources to the A.I. civs for money really.. pretty easy to manipulate them.. disregarding that.. well, you can make trading posts if it gets really hard.. or even have cities making gold instead of industry with the option.. I personally just use religion to fund myself using tithe though.

If you have any outdated military units try deleting them. If not cut the ones that aren't needed for any immediate campaigns.

on land mass maps that can be a bit problematic
since you have to spend your time and resources to find a lake with at least 1 or 2 city states / civ cities near it to get profit from it

I usually use my cargo ships internally for insane food or industry, but if you can't, gold is another way.. another method is by making it good for other civs to send trade routes TO you.. so getting the market national wonder, is pretty solid.. it also really helps going full tradition for money per population in your capital.. and in general..

But overall, if you have 5,000 positive.. and losing only a small amount.. I don't see a problem.

Yeah it is most likely because of your unit and building maintenance. I used to do that all the time until my 5-6 game lol. Just delete unused/unneeded units and delete some buildings and you'll be fine.

30 to -5? Were you in a golden age?

Outside of that, what everyone else told you. Roads, buildings, units, etc. All costs money. Set up trade caravans and you should be fine.

Another thought nobody mentioned...

Why sit on 5k gold? It's often the better choice to invest it smartly.

most likely this, as golden ages add +1 GPT for all tiles already generating GPT. the only other possibility is raids; so either losing a trade route or a pillaged street cutting off cities from your capital.

only makes sense if you are on the verge of a war. 1-2 internal trade routes are okay to get a city going, but usually you want that 200 GPT.

Land trade routes work well too. if you get a real good economic center going, a caravan can get up to 25-30 GPT too. it's not the 40+ of cargo ships, but nothing to sneeze at.

wait, what is a cargo ship actually called in Civ 5? A worker's boat or something?
