Ive owned and played about 1200 games on computers since the Tandy Cassette days and Civ 5 is one of a handful of games that holds up nicely.
In fact I am in the process of hunting the internet to purchase again original DVD Material in computer games because everything is being migrated to streaming and internet only. Its good to have stand alone DVD games that play on computers without a internet in the future.
This would be one of the few situations where the original store price of a DVD at 60 or so dollars increased to several hundred today on the second hand market.
I have been playing this game off and on for years now and I keep coming back... and I am not the only one.
Civ5 is the perfect blend (for me) between depth and simplicity. You can setup the board to your liking and no two games play the same. On the other hand it's not overinflated... all systems are easy to grasp.
If you haven't played Civ5 in 2023... you really should.
Not sure how it compares to the TW series... the last one I enjoyed/really played was Shogun II (and everything before that) is very different from Civ.
Think of Civ5 as a more complex Catan game combined with Risk.
Crashes, bugs, you name it?
Never had a single crash unless some mod was causing it. The game is very stable.
May I ask why that is the case? Could it be that overall Civ 5 is a more polished and balanced game?
Yes. It is more like a board game.
Civ 4 (a bit dated as this point) and Civ 5 are kind of the peak of the franchise. Or seemingly. Beyond Earth fell short, and Civ 6 has a bit of a mixed reception. Neither of those are necessarily terrible, more or less, depending upon whom you ask. But there is a lot of praise for both 4 and 5 for a reason.
It is worth playing 2023 simply because nothing has yet toppled it as king. It is consistently fun to go back and play a few games every so often. Whenever you got that itch for a historical-based 4x, Civ 5 is there waiting.
The AI in these games has been questionable, but it is extremely bad in 6. This is due to more complex game systems in which the AI has not been coded to mimic/play well.
As for those systems, they are interesting but in many ways pull the game from its 4x roots. I could go into detail, but won't waste your time with a lengthy post. If you've played the Starcraft games, that is kind of a good comparison. Broodwar has maintained popularity all the way up to the pro scene despite SC2 being the newer, shinier version.
I have over 10K Hrs and keep finding new mods and new ways to play never get tired of it.
The swift replies speak volumes...
As you can see... a 13 year old game still has a very active community.
Buy the game on sale (complete edition). Next Steam sale is in about a week. (21st if I am not mistaken).
Cool game man!
Not to mention CA's recent fall from grace with the release of Total War Pharaoh.
