what does it take to make them afraid?
like crazy I had an army that was bigger than all the other civs combined. I was an age ahead. and I had a history of warmongering. do they just not care if I kill them?

Build a nuke. Seriously, that does it (until they get their own nukes) I seldom use nukes, but I build one just for the respect it demands.

Well, if its to a certain point, they may just be attacking you to slow you down or they hope they have a chance to take a city or two of yours as they dont have any other course of action to take

Everyone responds to fear differently. The AIs in Civ5 will still try to stop you from winning. Even if they really can't.

i was at war with someone who was 5 turns across an ocean before I could even land my troops. I seiged his costal city for probably 10 turns, took heavy losses, and sounded the retreat. 1 turn into pulling my army back, he surrenderred and actually gave me the city i was seiging as a trade to get me to stop the war. AI is super dumb

They can and will become afraid if you take over many Cities quickly before a ceasefire is asked for.

I have made some of them afraid when I met them first time, each time I had to expand my borders, had a few developed cities and the only player that had built wonders. The note said Afraid where it would sometimes say agressive or hostile.

Once I was even denaunced when meeting napoleon first time, the turn after he made war on me. I did manage to teach him a lesson that lasted 2000 years, 4 well placed archers with a general, a few workers to make roads and forts. They got all promotions that the game allows, they became more powerfull than crossbows or longbows.

Paris burned for 2000 years before I allowed peace. I never marched on the city, just rain terror down on the city and any unit they sendt out, workers and settlers too, no mercy.

It was so much fun to make ranged attacks every turn for such a long time, hearing the women and children scream and cry was like music, giggles.

After that no nation dared to denaunce me throught the game.

I declared war on a AI( they were asking for it ) after a handful of turns which i didnt attack them in they gave up and gave me a city. Having a big army and moving it around a AI's border makes them afraid

After a while they will realise though and try to start a war with you. Its good if they have their cities spread out as you can box each city in. If their cities are clustered together then a large army would be needed to do that
