can`t seem to improve relationship with other civs!
ok so, when i click on a city or a capital, the owner/leader of the capital pops up and greets me but i can`t seem to give him/her any gifts to improve the relationship.

trading , helping in wars , send units in there border to gift said units , free units from Barbarian hand and bring them back to the Civilization they once belonged to and more

Reasons could be, you had trade disagreements, diffrent religon, allias with someone they hate, diffrent idelogy, when you embargo or do something they don't like in the world congress, have your units on your border right beside theirs etc. I would say those are the main ones.

Ways to fix it, eh not many I would say because you cant reverse it, also keep in mind that Civilization could just be like that also, one example is England, Queen Elizibeth. She's very hostle. Other Civilizations are strong and others weak with their personalites. Alexander the great takes city states or another players on, so in the end it just really depends.

Hopes this help, I've been playing Sid Meier's Civilization V for about a year and a half so.:2018spacefox::cozyspaceengineersc:

Sometimes it's possible but often it isn't possible at all. In my experience on harder difficulties, for example, if I'm very close by to another Civ, they will want to conquer your lands and you can try anything and they still hate your guts. Half of the time they'll go to friendly and then announce war on you out of nowhere, and will literally say "I hate you, I was pretending to like you, you moron!"

One thing that can help you understand their relationship with you, if you haven't seen it yet, is hovering your mouse on top of the relationship status ("friendly", "war", etc). It will give you a nice list of all the positive and negative factors that are influencing them at the moment.

On higher difficulties, the only sure-fire way to make an alliance with a nation is to join the same Ideology as them in the late game. This seems to do the trick. Other than that it's very hard to change a nation's opinion of you, it's mostly decided by the geopolitics of your current game.

if there's one of the AIs in the game who is a big warmonger who all the other AIs hate, you can make the other AIs like you by denouncing the more aggressive AI. I think someone told me you can get a big diplomacy boost from building a great artist or something and having him build a landmark on the lands of the AIs somewhere.

Another thing that makes the AIs like you a lot is if you liberate a city of one of the AIs who was conquered militarily by a warmongering AI. The benefits of this are twofold: the liberated AI player is extremely friendly toward you, and the game gives you a liberation bonus that erases previous warmonger penalties from capturing AI cities in wars.

" send units in there border to gift said units"

Did not know you can gift units to non city-state AIs. That's really interesting -- i'll have to try that. Do you get a big diplo boost from that? Like, you know how some diplomacy boosts show up as bright green text, and some of them show up as more dim/darker green text, suggesting these bonuses are less significant? Is the diplo boost you get from gifting units bright green or dark green?

Points in favour for diplomacy:

80 - Liberate their capital (liberating any city gives a bonus but not as big)
50 - Fought against a common foe
35 - Public declaration of friendship
30 - Accepted their request for help
*30 - Recently traded
20 - Build a landmark in their territory
20 - Rescued their worker or settler
20 - Helped them pass a world congress proposal
20 - Successfully voted them in as host of world congress
15 - Both have made a public declaration of friendship with the same leaders
15 - Denounced the same leaders
15 - Liked your world congress proposal
10 - Forgave them for spying
6 - No contested borders
5 - Same ideology
5 - You adopted their religion as the majority
3- They adopted your religion as the majority and don't have their own
1 - You have an embassy with them

*This is the maximum bonus, a luxury trade is enough for the maximum.

Negative Modifiers:

^15+ Warmongering
80 - You captured their original capital
50 - Used a nuclear weapon
40 - Refused to move your troops from their borders when asked
35 - You denounced them
35 - They denounced you
35 - You are building too many cities in a short period of time
30+ - Conquered a city state they are protecting (also applies warmongering points)
30 - Used a great general to steal their territory
30 - Broke a promise to stop excavating their artifacts
20 - Refused to stop excavating their artifacts
20 - Other civs they like more have denounced you (this can stack)
20 - You asked them to stop settling near you
20 - You broke a promise to them (these stack if you break multiple promises)
20 - You made a demand
20 - Their world congress proposal failed and you voted against it
10-30 - Competing for the same city states (Value depends on civ bias)
10-30 - They covet your lands
10-20 - You built wonders they wanted
15 - Refused to stop settling near them
15 - Refused to stop buying land near them
15 - You denounced a civ they like
15 - Made a declaration of Friendship with a civ they dont like
15 - Broke a promise to another civ.
15 - They disliked your world congress proposal
15 - Bullied a city state they are protecting
10 - You refused to stop spying
10 - You asked them to stop spying
5 - Differing ideology
5 - They bullied a city state you are protecting and you didnt agree to look the other way
8+ - Broke a promise to stop converting cities
4+ - Refused to stop converting their cities
2+ - Converted their city when they have their own religion

Note that with world congress proposals the AI will sometimes vote against their own proposal due to change of circumstance, in this case if they pay you to vote against their proposal and it fails you will still get the penalty for making their proposal fail despite doing what they asked and them voting the same way.

^ Warmongering penalties can reach extremely high values and as well as being affected by your actions also depend on how much a civ hates warmongers. You get a small penalty for war declarations and a much larger penalty for capturing cities. The smaller the civ you attack the higher the penalty. Anybody at war with the same civ only counts half the warmonger points gained.
This does decay slowly over time and liberating cities will reduce the warmonger points but once you are considered a warmonger expect a chain of negative modifiers to follow.

When civs become unhappy with you, you risk suffering a chain reaction that causes near enough a global collapse in reputation. One civ denounces you, anybody that likes them becomes unhappy with you, another civ denounces you and so on. This is why I advise against the use of defensive pacts, if a defensive pact triggers it applies a warmonger penalty and can cause you to break a promise. This can easily trigger the start of a chain.

Play as Korea, Korea is a really great science Civilization, you can get 100 science before turn 100 with other Civ's but it would be more difficult.

1 population = 1 science.
Science buildings further increase the science per population on top of other bonuses so to rapidly increase science you need food and growth modifiers.

The Granary is the core building for kick starting growth so you'll want to research pottery first.

Policy wise you want to rush Tradition, tradition will give a growth bonus in your first 4 cities and a further bonus in your capital.

Tile wise needs a bit more balancing, you want food and production. If you start near a river or find a good spot with a river for your second city get farms on any hills by the river. That will give you a healthy balance of resources.

Wheat is a great bonus tile to start near as you can already build farms, cattle, sheep and deer are good sources of early food and production but do require research. Your luxuries aren't an immediate priority, you need them when happiness gets low as unhappiness stems growth but getting pastures, camps and farms up or chopping down trees will be more useful if you have 2+ happiness.

If you want to get an early wonder the best early wonders for research are Temple of Artemis and Hanging Gardens. Hanging gardens gives a bigger bonus initially but Temple of Artemis grants an increasing food bonus as the game goes on.

Great library looks like a good choice at first glance but is actually not very good.

(Oh and I added some info on negative modifiers to the earlier post, the diplomacy values were provided on civ fanatics a few years ago by Carlsguides)
