Sid Meier's Civilization V
Why do you still play this game?
I have no idea why I keep coming back to Civ5. The ai is a joke, the graphics are bland, the engine is creaky; yet here I am playing again.

Civ V is still playable. 3 doesn't work well on modern machines and 4 suffered from doom stacks and weird combat resolution. Civ 5 with all it's expansions is still an amazing game, even if it's scope got a bit smaller. My favorite aspect of Civ 3 was it really felt like you were creating a nation and then morphing them into world spanning empires. Civ 6 has some interesting concepts, but the way time and tech worked kinda sucks and the scale made me feel like I was playing a state or province, not an imperially ambitious nation.

Civ 5 also incorporated the workshop, and it's amazing. Not needing to do anything but click a green check mark to get mods loaded and working was a godsend for me. That, coupled with the workshop community, made Civ 5 still totally playable years later. The additional content you can get (Shout out to SMAN mods in particular) mean that Civ 5 can be played as a couple different games depending on the complexity you want and the flavor you desire.

As an aside, I still play Civilization: Call to Power via emulator. It's a flawed game in many ways, sitting firmly between Civ II and III in age and development, but the post-modern and future eras are magnificently dystopian and the non-lethal combat units are fantastic.
Civ 6 just felt....bad.

Its was somehow too micromanage-y because of the districts and too removed from the core of what made civ fun for me. It also felt like a slog to get through some points, which I never felt with any other iteration.

For me the series goes 2/AC>4/5>1>>>>3/6/BE.

4 was the pinnacle of square map design and who doesn't love Leonard Nemoy's VO work, although the player rewards felt better in 2 with that silly little throne room, and 2 still has the best wonder movies. 5 and its hex map was unique enough to be it's own game and still feel like Civ.

3 was ruined by corruption, and BE just felt like a cheap knockoff of AC with no depth or urgency to keep playing after a few turns. Also felt like a cheap mobile port in a lot of ways, but not nearly as much as the Spaceships game.

Obligatory AC was best civ game ever comment goes here...
Civ5 allows me to choose my playstyle and isn't forcing me to play wide like most 4x do. Wanna rush military? Sure, Want to turtle as a small nation? Go on. Want to experiment? Green light.
Im also not very competitive player and like to play mp without having to fight other players but still compete with them in culture, economy and science and civ5 allows this playstyle.
I like policies, i like the design, i like how cities work, i like the combat. It would be easier to describe whats stopping me from playing it more often and usually its just the burnout after more than 1200 hours on steam alone.
Because I'd much rather play agains AI Pedro in Civ V who - if he survives past Rennaisance - is a conniving, calculating mastermind with his tourism as opposed to Civ 6 Pedro who screeches like a little child whenever you play the game (get a great person).

And the Swedish representation in Civ 6 is just awful. Not the best choice of leader. Ulrika Eleonora would've been miles better. Then again, Firaxis hasn't been exactly stellar with Sweden. Civ V grossly mismodeled Gustavus Adolphus after Erik XIV.

I like the movement in Civ 5 better in that you can expend your last one point of move onto any terrain. It just makes it more convenient and doesn't slow down the game. Last thing you want in a civ game is for it to be slowed down.
Started playing again in March to try to finish the goals. Not so far now, only 15 or so left. :)
This is a great game and the best version of Civ. The problem with CIV VI though its a great game is its complexity and occasional instability. CIV V is infinitely replayable. Thanks for hours of pleasant playing.
