If you don't, they're just as good as any other start, because they're full of flood plains and resources that make them just as good as anywhere else.
I don't think anyone's assuming a perfect start and perfect wonder production. But there's a lot of nice stuff you can get out of a desert start. You seem unable to comprehend any desert start other than flat, resource-less, river-free desert as far as the eye can see.
It does force your hand to bee line for Petra and Piety, and keeping your fingers crossed none of the others started in the desert, so you're competing with second cities rather than capitals to build it. It's not perfect, nor does it need to be. But if you manage it, you're starting the game on a solid foundation.
