I played Aztecs and went Liberty instead of Tradition once -- in the mid-game I had to put all my cities on "stop growth" to manage unhappiness. Otherwise my cities were still growing even when unhappy.
Even better with the 'barbarians - unlimited exp (v 2)' mod
Culture gain from kill is not enough to make you go wide or liberty properly and if you wanted more culture, poland free policy would be way better anyway. This ability will probably allow you to complete tradition bit faster and maybe give 1~2 more social policies than other civs but it is just negligible.
Also, jaguar is ok replacement for scout that has little bit more future value than scout.
In short, when you play Aztec you know you are playing because of floating garden and should build your strategy around it.
Oh and don't open honour for the extra barbarian culture, it is so little it is just not worth it.
