Basically your Gold Input has to be greater than Gold Output.

Gold Input Levers:
- Build all gold buildings in each city (Market, Bazaar, Bank, Mint etc)
- Build Gold Wonders ((Neusch. Castle, Big Ben etc)
- Max out all Trade Routes (Sea Routes give more gold than Land)
- Spam Trading Posts on every available empty tile
- Go for Social Policies (Commerce etc that reduce maintenance costs)

Gold Output:
- Usually Building and Unit Maintenence cost the most - so delete unncessary units , dont build useless buildings in smaller cities

Capture you nearest neighbor's capital, and build lots of trading posts where his farms and lumber mills used to be.

If you hover over the gold info on the bar, it says what's giving you gold and what's taking away gold. It's most likely unit maintenance.

Heh, my problem is always that I make too much. My allies start groveling at my feet for it. "Maybe you could help me out as I'm not doing as well as you <give 4970gold?>"

I hurt my relations if I don't, but I don't wanna give away half my gold either. always end up with like 500+/turn.

Dude, it is YOUR gold; keep it in pocket, spend it on your needs; NOT the AI's, LET it/them go broke !!!

In brave new world a lot of the gold has been taken off the map with the addition of the trade mechanic. So make sure you use your trade routes. V. important.

Also remember to sell strategic/luxury resources to AI players. You can also sell diplomatic concessions like embassies and open borders. :)

Most of your gold will be used up with BUILDINGS in the later game if you have alot of granaries, barracks', colosseums, etc. in many cities. Sell them to reduce your defecit.
With BNW, as Saddam suggested, make use of trade routes and build gold producing buildings like markets, banks and stock exchanges :)

That's a good way to look at it. If you build gradually, you should be able to handle your economy. It's those crazy swings you get from making a Great Leap Forward (to borrow the term from the Chinese) that can wreck your economy. War in particular is bad for gold production, unless you win. Don't get caught in quagmire wars, and try to fight only if you can be decisive and fast with victory.

No need to capture other civilization citys for making them puppet and spam the markets on tiles.

You can settle new city in good growth place and put city on focusing on gold. Remember, not all citys must be militaristic, just build gold buildings in the city and some buildings like walls and castle if you have hostile civilization near you.

Also, you can ask for tribute with city states near you. 80 gold in early eras looks like its not much, but it gives you big boost. Dont ask for tribute city states that you wish to be friends/allys.

Remember; having your citys connection to your capital is important !

You can destroy the enemy economy just by pillaging the roads around their capital.

Its a dirty way to crash the empire...but we, as humans, would do anything to win

Why wouldn't you want to be friends/allies with a city-state? Same thing for attacking them. I've been playing Civ 5 for years and never gotten the achievement to annex a previously puppetted city-state because I've never fought one. The bonuses from allying them are better than the bonuses for conquering them, so I've never done so. Why would you? Ditto for demanding tribute, if you're going to lose relationship points with them.

A not worth relationship with me with an ally is not worth it. Specially the culture/food/religion city states.

That is also depends what leader I am playing. Aggresive leaders makes me demand and raze others city for economy.

By the way, demanding tribute does not means its conquering them. Does not count as they are part of your empire and increases unhappyness.

The key for succes is to be the strongest.

You cant pay to city states to be friends/ally with you at ealry game. 1000 gold in early game for most leaders its a tons of money.

At start you can ask for tributes and at later time to stop with the tributes and start being friends/allys.

It is knowen that early/middle eras can have difficult time with economy.

Hey, everyone with their tactics.

Trade routes are best. But they have a major downside. That's why I rarely use them.

Trade your extra luxury goods for 7 gold per turn to Civs that have money. Build gold hoarding wonders and other buildings. Like the market, bank, stock exchange, colossus, etc.

The problem with trade routes is that you start to rely on them. They are very hard to protect, so when you get attacked, you lose them all. Then you'll be financially strapped.

I try to always control the UN. Emargo city states and runaway Civs. So nobody is allowed to trade anyway.
