Now, in the terms of the game: Keep a military which doesn't take all of your income. Build only what you need and what gives you resources once is a good idea to do so. Build roads beetwen your cities (untill they are actually connected they will take part of your money) Stablish trade routes with other civs.
He may be talking about the Brave New World DLC. This DLC adds two trade units, caravans (by land) and cargo ships (by water). You can use them to establish trade routes with other nations, something which is, oddly enough, missing from the base game.
Have you actually enabled the mod? I think you have to scroll down a little when on the Game Start Screen and then check on or off the DLC's. (Sorry about the hasty writing I've got some stuff I should be doing)
Seriously though, more cities = more gold from city connections.
Build Machu Picchu, that gives 25% gold from city connections.
Play as a Civ that's good at generating gold, such as Portugal or Venice.
By the time your last city has a bank you will be making plenty if gold.
