Completing the LIberty tree grants you a free great person -I'll often use this guy to fund a religion (Great Prophet), but a couple of cities with Shrines (+2 faith per turn), faith from religious city states, and faith found by my scouts often means I can use my free great person for rushing wonders (Great Engineer), or use a Great scientist to build a Science building.
Note: The Liberty Social Policy means you don't need to waste time building Workers/Settlers early on (you can always pinch an extra worker from other Nations/City States if you really need one).
-I'll often spend my first gold on a warrior/archer to defend my worker (your starting warrior also needs to help fight barbarians after a bit of scouting).
I've decided to use the More Active Religions mod to increase the number of available religions on a large map from five to eight, when using 22 civs. In my current game, no-one on my continent founded a religion, and I'm in the middle of the 20th century with some cities not having more than 50% religious followers yet.
