CIV 5 - Windows 10 Direct X Fix/Solution!
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

Background...
CIV 5 on my Dad's laptop was failing to load, was working previously... but suddenly stopped working. It kept freezing DX9 or closing down on DX10/11 and asked me to try and fix it.

I tried everything, everyone ever said - different compatibility settings etc and nothing worked.

SOLUTION...
Uncheck ALL compatibility checks except Disable display scaling on high DPI settings (this was already ticked by default for me) - that's the only one that can/should be ticked.

Follow these simple steps:-

-Launch Steam
-Library -> Games
-Right click on CIV5
-Click Properties
-On GENERAL tab, click Set Launch Options
-Type in: "-dx11" (no spaces or speech marks)
-Click OK
-Click Close
-Launch game as usual
-IMPORTANT: choose DirectX9 version in the launcher!

That should resolve your issue!

EXTRA SOLUTION ONLY IF YOU CAN'T REACH CIV LAUNCHER
-Launch Steam
-Library -> Games
-Right click on CIV5
-Click Properties
-Click LOCAL FILES tab
-Click Browse Local Files
-Scroll down to Launcher
-Right click on Launcher
-Click Properties
-Click Compatibility
-Click Run this program in compatibility mode for:
-Select Windows 7 (or failing that try Windows 8)
-Click Apply
-Click OK
-Launch game as normal... then you should be able to reach the launcher to select DX9.

TL;DR? Well then that's your fault :) haha.

I hope this helps!

Love you all... and goodbye!

TL;DR -

Turn off all the compatibility stuff. Open Steam, right click on Civ 5, Properties > General tab > Launch Options type "-dx11". Run Civ 5, Choose DX9 version.. VOILA!!

Didnt work, I type in the -dx11 thing and launched in dx9 and a dx9 tab opened for a split second and then closed just like it did before

I'm little bit suspicious about that. You are setting launch option to "-dx11" even though the correction launch option for DirectX 11 is "\dx11". It was used to skip the launcher when the old launcher was used and I think I tried that with the new launcher and it didn't work anymore. You said that launching the game still opens a launcher (new one I assume), so the "-dx11" you put to the launch options are definitely not skipping the launcher.

Why that fixed your dad's laptop... Well, my best quess as a programmer is that there is a bug in the new launcher (not surprised) and the launcher malfunction when there is anything in the launch options and by pure luck that malfunction (or something else you did) fixed the game on that computer. If my guess is right, then your dad's laptop should work with anything in launch options (not just "-dx11"), if the new launcher breaks when used with launch options. You could try that out easily, type "cat" in launch options and it probably works (in your dad's computer). I would be very surprised if that would be a general fix that works on other computers though. Computers can be ass sometimes, but good thing you got that one working.
