Tradition Build Order
Im pretty new to Civ 5, and I'm trying to determine a good build order for Tradition. What I have currently tends to look like this:
Monument > Scout > (Usually somewhere in here I will buy another scout) > Worker
From there I get torn between building Settlers, Wonders (great library, hanging gardens, Tempel of Artimis) and Soldiers (usually archers)
I know a lot of people rush for cities but I usually hold off on that and build up a decent enough military to invade nearby civs and take their land. However I'm nooby at this game so IDK if thats a good idea.

I'd build at least a second city before invading. Try not to be tempted to overbuild for tradition (including capture). Also, remember tradition gives you free monuments in you first 4 cities, so possibly apart from the capital, don't waste production building monuments in those cities. Perhaps try: scout, granary, scout, worker.

Disclaimer:I'm not a great tradition player and I haven't yet beat the game above King.

I always go for scout first to find all the ruins I can. After that you can mix it up between workers and monuments or even another scout. As for settlers, I usually wait until I have enough gold to buy the first one. Then once you get more production you don’t suffer from the zero growth penalty for very long. It’s all subjective though, different starts/difficulties call for different build orders. This is just my 2¢.

It doesn't. It gives you a free culture building. That means if you've already built a monument you will get a free amphitheatre and so on.

False. I just tested it, if you have a monument, it dosen't just gives it to other cities.

Just about every early-game strategy seems to work fine in that you can win. I have tried holding off on cities as long as possible, building as many cities as possible as fast as possible, taking over nearby cities--they all seem to work.

If I start with Tradition first I have usually gone through all of its choices faster than I could take advantage of the benefits.

It does seem to depend on the luck of your terrain which strategy works best. I did have trouble once going the many-cities approach when I had food outpacing production. It led to high population relative to happiness well into the midgame, but I did win in the end with a space victory.

It does, once you have researched the tech for ampitheatres...

Yep, you do get the free amphitheatre. I know some players like to hard build the monument, because they find it "too slow" to wait for the free one, especially if you don't find a culture ruin to kickstart Tradition.

I used to build a monument; now I build an extra warrior or scout instead, and wait for the free monument, even if ancient ruins are disabled. My typical build order is warrior, scout, shrine, granary, settler, library.

If I open Honor or Piety (I almost never open Piety) I will build a monument.

I never start invading people untill the Medieval or Rennesiance Era.

I don't find building a monument early unless you are Ethiopia to be worth it. Would rather go the usual Scout Scout Shrine instead.

There is no real said blueprint for success, a good player can adapt to the circumstances. Sometimes it's worth it to rush great library, sometimes it's a recepy for disaster. But whatever the case, a scout comes first. For me, I try to get four cities and 100 science in 100 turns.

Ok, I see a lot of people saying that the early monument isnt worth it, but why? How else are you supposed to get culture if you don't build one. The free culture buildings require 3 policies, how do you get that and not build monuments?
Matthew Jul 15, 2018 @ 12:15pm
The Tradition opener gives +3 culture.

Also, some players don't want too much culture right away as they want to hit Renaissance and unlock Rationlism before getting too many policies. Policy cost scales up, so if you end up with too many filler policies before Rationalism, it will slow down Secularism and/or finishing Rationalism.

Well I dont go for Rationlism, I go for Commerce. I like the landsknechts so I can quickly build an army cheeply, and invade rapidly. And the +2 Happiness for luxury resources is amazing to combat the extra unhappiness from annexing cities.
