Is awesome, complicated and brutal. It has a ton of magic spells, items and units, and several nations through 3 ages. It can generate world maps or you can use or create custom made with beautiful graphics made by the community.
And for combat, you don't participate on it, at least not directly. You give general orders to your units. You decide the formation and on which aprt of the battlefield they should start with a general strategy of what they should do. You can order your generals. priests and mages to make certain actions for the first 5 turns of combat. And after that, everything that happens will b decided by the general strategy you placed.
Is probably one of the most complex strategy games out there you can find. Is mainly a war game, and the AI doesn't deal with diplomacy other than they are currently warring against you or not (and it will end in yes almost always). MP has more intrigue and alliances that can be broken in just 1 turn because only 1 can be the pantokrator. Now, single player still has a lot to offer, and the AI can still cause problems to experienced players.
Despite its age RoN has held up well, especially when I am in the mood for a quick Strategic War. A full-scale 1 v 3-or-4 game typically will run 60 min. {game-time} or less. I take longer than that because I <Pause> a lot to peruse & consider new developments; effectively making RoN a TBS.
If you enjoy Strategy games RoN would be a good add to your Library; Easy to learn, Quick to play, Wide variety of play options. Build your Empire from the Stone Age up to the Information Age! RoN includes several Tutorial & Exercise style sub-games that are enjoyable to play separately for a quick RTS fix.
While RoN may not be quite as "in-depth" as Civilization, because of that RoN is a quick-to-learn game. Still, Gamer must develop & manage several types of resources & decide where & how to best build & expand your Nation.
Maps: Depending upon your preference, the RoN World can range in size from Arena {good for a 1v1 war}, through Standard {for a 4 nation conflict}, up to Huge for up to 8 nations.
About 24 map Styles are available; from “random” to Great Lakes, Rain Forest, Outback, Mediterranean, New World, etc.
Resources: Food, Wood, Metal, Oil, Wealth, & Knowledge basically are limitless & renewable. Output depends upon the number of production & enhancement facilities created, & the number of Civilians assigned to a resource.
Graphics: RoN has excellent 3D graphics for Units & Architecture. Styles differ for each Nation & vary for each change in “Age”. Units & buildings are attractively & effectively displayed in 3D.
That games 75% off right now! awwww yeah
And this games also like Civ 5 - i had no idea there were so many offshoot games
If you like sci-fi, other very good ones I recommend are Endless Space 1 and 2.
Have fun!
