Easiest to play Civs?
Hello!

My sister and I have been playing Civ 5 and having a blast, and recently my sister convinced my mom (who never plays any video games ever) to try Civ 5 on her laptop. She tried as Poland and had a blast.

I now am trying to convince my dad to play with my mom so they can have a game to play together and have some fun. While I think Poland is the best for learning (as that's who I learned on), my mother will be playing as Poland.

So I ask:

Besides Poland, who is the best civ to learn on? They will likely be on Chieftain and will have 0 knowledge of the game. I am not looking for the best optimized civ obviously, just the one that gets the basics down the best.
My guess is Rome, as the general production bonus is nice.
Also they will be playing without mods, barbarians, espionage, and city states will be OFF.

Rome is not so simple because you have to prioritise production carefully in your capital to get the bonus in your other cities. A civ whose special abilities come without too much effort and give decent benefits is best for a beginner.

I'd suggest Persia. Their UU isn't bad, you should be building banks anyway and the extra turns of GA don't hurt. Otherwise everything about them is normal to learn.

India, America, or Babylon. Not sure about Egypt...

Germany seems pretty easy to me. You build your army fast because of your ability to capture barbarian soldiers and the Panzers you get later on are really good.

He said barbs off.

China is obviously the best civ, what with double the firepower.

I second Persia. They're really simple, and the only real skill you need to utilise their ability is to focus on prioritising things during a golden age, and even if you don't, you get the bonuses anyway.

I ended up having them do Poland and Rome, however if they try again with different civs I'll definitely have my dad try Persia. I personally haven't tried them, but I may give them a shot in my own game as well haha.

About choosing a Civilization with a fun Unique Unit, one of the rare UU who starts from the very beginning and one you can keep the whole game, upgrading it through all eras, one of those UU who make the game more attractive for dads and moms. This is where the Pathfinder comes to mind, with his Shoshones, perhaps on a TSL map.
Then you give Montezuma and his Jaguars to your mam.
They should have their first meeting once again, soon enough...

And if they keep being bored:

I'd say Korea. Since their ability gives boosts when science buildings/wonders are built, and they usually are in any game, there's nothing special you have to do in order to quickly ramp up your science.

Otherwise, maybe Egypt for the wonder bonus - it's simple but helps a lot.

I'm pretty bad at this game but I found Japan to be fairly easy.

If they're going to be on a low difficulty, I'd say it doesn't matter much. There's plenty to learn in the first game or two before they'll even pay much attention to specific civ specialties. Sorry not a real answer.

That said - can't they both be Poland?

The thing I'd always love about Japan: Samouraïs can fish...

Ha! I didn't know that. Cool.
The achievement is crazy, though - kill a unit with a unit that has 1hp. I think I did it once by mistake, but was offline. To go back and get that one ... no thanks.

The achievement is from vanilla game, where units had only 10 hp, instead of G&K's and BNW's 100 hp. So, it's much harder with expansions.

If I remember correctly I got that achievement from attack that killed a barbarian, but my starting hp was higher than 1, maybe 3-4 and my hp after the attack was 1. That was just a short vanilla game tryout.. got the achievement in 5 minutes or so.

Anything is good EXCEPT for military-dependent civs (Mongolia, Huns, America, England). Combat is hard to learn in the first few games.
