Hi, my friend got a copy of Civ five when it first came out, played it for about a month, and after getting a new computer never touched it again. I have the case and the Gods and Monsters cd too, but I don't know where to find the code to download it. I don't believe he had a steam account at the time since this is the only game he played and he did everything manually. Where do I find the steam key? Closest I can find is the activation key for the Americas Cradle of Civilization Map.

You don't own it on Steam so you don't have a Steam key. You can try adding the base game key to Steam as a Steam game and see if it works. If not, you cannot add it to Steam.

Your friend already activated it on a Steam account. You could never play it without doing so.
