Also, pitboss dedicated server might be a good option, if you have a (Civ V capable) computer to spare. Pitboss is included in the tools sections in the library, but not many uses it and I haven't used it in years. I used it only for two players, but it still helped as it eliminate some MP problems.
In my experience it's not advisable to play Civ V with more than 4 persons, even with LAN and very strong connection.
I regularly play with lots of save games just in case of. Plus most of the friends I play with are real life friends and not random from the internet :-)
Connection is also depending of the location where you're hosting the game.
I be picky to choose for a game, but always try and experience the troubles :-)
