64 Bit Civ on macOS for Steam
Posting this here, but question about two versions of Civ on Mac through Steam. Civ 4 and Civ 5. Will they both be updated to 64 bit? I noticed the App Store version was updated to 64 for Civ 5. Haven't checked on Civ 4 yet. I have a lot of $$ invested via Steam for the game, and would hate to have to buy it again.

The chance of someone from the community knowing this is pretty low, nearing zero.

Your best bet is to put in a support ticket with the publisher/developer: Aspyr.

I asked Aspyr support about this a few months ago

Still nothing.

I opened another request with Aspyr. Will update when I hear back.

I saw this on MacRumors a couple weeks ago. My inference is if it stopped being sold, it won't be updated. https://support.aspyr.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000214186

I just got the following from Aspyr:

>The Steam version of Civilization V will be receiving a 64-bit update. However, at this time we >do not have an ETA for when the update will be available.

So Civ5 will live on, but according to the link posted by nebbigredmachine, Civ4 is toast on Catalina.

Awesome - that should also solve the problems with out-of-memory errors for a lot of mods.

that said i think i'll myself skip the 10.15 because a lot of others games will not work or will take time to adapt 64 bit. Maybe even the 10.16, it's not a big deal to skip 2 versions.

They removed 32-bit emulation and aren't likely to ever add it back. So there's really not much use in waiting. However, you could virtualize a 32-bit OS with VirtualBox. That's what I'm doing for older games.

henning.micah can you tell me more about running a 32bit emulation with Virtual Box. I have tried to make a VM using Fusion 11.5, but Civ V shuts down with no error message.

I face the same problem of Civ V after upgrading my MacOS to Catalina. It shows me "unknown error".

If it is available on apples app store in 64 bit but not in steam, isn't that a steam issue?

No, Aspyr hasn't published it yet in 64-bit on Steam. They have announced they will though. No official ETA yet.

I’d guess about a month to get the binary updated. There was a similar issue back in the day when Apple moved to Intel from PPC, then again when they dropped the PPC emulating support. Change is inevitable.
