If it fails to get its own religion it will just go with whatever other religion is being spread by some other civ but they wont ever care if it is their 'prefered' one or not.
The tenets you choose also have pretty much no effect on whether they will like any particular religion or not.
I try to pick what fits the civ I am playing the best but that's just for role playing purposes.
Celts, Spanish, Rome, France will usually choose Catholic
England, America will typically be Protestant
you can assume that certain religions have morales to their real life counterparts. So if you personally are against the Ethics of Judaism or Islam. Buddhism or Christianity you can OPT for other religions. It's mainly out of personal preference. But some civs are religious fanatics like Spain who will spam Missionaries at you and other countries.
The name of the religion does not matter, they could had created a game with religion a, religion b, etc.
but aside from that exception, the religion a vs b vs c does not really matter reality looks like a waste of opportunity here.
I would like it if there was some "exclusive" factors for a particular religion.
1) Like Catholics should get a bonus feature if they find Notre Dame first , it gives bonus HP to the holy Catholic city
2) Judaism should get a penalty to happiness if their tiles have a pig on it (not that pigs exist in Civ 5),
3) Hinduism should get a massive faith bonus if they possess the highest number of cattle(Cow) tiles owned
4) Islamic civs should starve at a slower rate than others since they are used to fasting
u get me?? the possibilities are endless. Fireaxis should double down on the religion thing
At least all of the ones I've known.
as for hindus they revere cow, so they should get hooked up if cows are on their tiles, as long as they not slaughtered.
Truffles.
But the thing is, the current setup of religion is quite brilliant. By decoupling the tenets from the specific religions and countries, they prevent stereotyping things. They also stop lengthy, controversial debates about, say, Islam being better than Christianity (for specific bonus reasons) which would backfire horribly in a market like the US. Or vice versa, being accused of making Christianity the only valid option and deliberately gimping other religions to placate their biggest market.
nah, i dont think the people who play civ games are that dumb and shallow that that they would have to reduce themselves to have debates like that...
by your logic, i mean technically right now as civ 5 stands, there are no debates how Notre Dame (Catholic) is better//worse than Taj Mahal (Muslim).
Or Mosque bonus as it compares to Church, etc etc
