You need Melee to caputre

You can't. Bring a spearman along to capture the city after your archers wear it down.

Even a melee navy.

Your range types do great in battering down defnses, but those effete snobs WON'T get their hands dirty (fashionable Nobles, you know); it takes those uncouth knife-boy lowlife (melee) scum to the dirty work of clearing out a city garrison once the outer defenses are down .

Nobles and the like were typically knights...

Maybe that's why they take a penalty when attacking cities. ;) Cav units are still *very* effective at taking cities, they just need more ranged support than infantry does.

I'm pretty sure once Mounted Units become Armored Units, that penalty is removed, making them amonst the strongest units in the game. Them rich folk man... (The only mounted unit that sucks are Lancers, who are pretty weird because they're also what I like to call Piercing Units, who's effective against Mounted Units...)

It's odd how everything visually becomes a ranged class once you get past a certain era, but certain ranged classes will still refuse to capture a city, yet this other range class can do it just fine.

It's best to refer to units as their official types regarding land units (Infintry, Ranged, Mounted/Armor and Seige; where only Infintry and Mounted/Armor Units can capture cities)

Even scouts can capture a city. Attacking and capturing a city is 100% quaranteed victory if you attack a city which has 0hp by using a melee unit. Even a scout with 1hp can capture a city, if it is shot down to 0hp before the attack. I have sometimes fought with just bunch of composite bowmen and a single scout with 3 movement as my city capturing unit. Horsemen/Knight would be the best for that, because they can wait away from the city firing range.

There is no such thing as infantry units (outside of the unit named Infantry) as a unit type. It would be best if you referred to them as their official unit types.
