This is from Aspyr who ported the game to Mac. I’m currently in the same boat waiting for it to get solved.

If you're a gamer, never rush updating the OS on any platform, Mac OSX included.
It's even worse withs Macs since it's gonna take for ever, if not never, for the game developers to update most of the game for the very few Mac gamers.

Thanks, LaCru79. So it seems the solution is to disable either Gos & Kings or Brave New World. You can't have both expansions active at the same time.

As a complete addict of the game, I was bummed when I couldn't get it to run under High Sierra (on my Macbook Air). After reading that it was a FIlesystem problem, I installed Civ 5 to an SD card (formatted by my Nikon camera) and the game worked fine, no weird slowdowns either. I didn't disable any of the add-ons, I just ran it like normal after telling Steam to install it to the SD card.

I imagine this would also work on a USB 3.0/C flashdrive that was formatted with an older filesystem.

I've been sticking to 10.12 because of this, but Apple loves to let me know that I should update to 10.13, it even downloaded it automatically on my computer, gotta be sure to not misclick the notifications >.>

There's another, perhaps easier workaround. I haven't done it yet, but read about making a disk image:

If you're on MacOS High Sierra (10.13.x) there is a known issue and work-around which may apply to your situation. Apparently the Brave New World and Gods & Kings DLC's cannot both be enabled simultaneously. I had this problem on my system, and found that if I disable Gods & Kings then everything runs fine again.

Here's the official Aspyr support article for this issue:

Due to the nature of Mac OS, I suggest that you should try to find a manual solution

You can play the full game on Mac OS if you install the game to an SD card or a USB drive instead of your hard drive. Super easy, works fine.

I have same issue after update high sierra. It's work after migrate to other fs than AFS

1. use disk utility to create a partition with MacOS extented filesystem.

2. mv ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps /Volumes/new disk

3. ln -s /Volumes/new disk/steamapps ~/Library/Application Support/Steam

4. Restart steam.

Excellent!

"Crashes when creating a game with both Brave New World and Gods & Kings expansion packs enabled."
SOLUTION
Deactivate either expansion to bypass this crash.

Just to confirm what has been stated by others - the solution to run the game perfectly with all expansions is to uninstall the game, then create a new volume using disk utility, using file type mac os extended. Then restart computer, then in steam preferences create a new game directory and reinstall the game to this new directory on the mac os extended volume. Works perfectly.
