It's even worse withs Macs since it's gonna take for ever, if not never, for the game developers to update most of the game for the very few Mac gamers.
I imagine this would also work on a USB 3.0/C flashdrive that was formatted with an older filesystem.

1. use disk utility to create a partition with MacOS extented filesystem.
2. mv ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps /Volumes/new disk
3. ln -s /Volumes/new disk/steamapps ~/Library/Application Support/Steam
4. Restart steam.

SOLUTION
Deactivate either expansion to bypass this crash.
