Connecting to my capital

their was no place by the ocean so I went inland,l built a road to the ocean thinking it might connect my city...didnt work...city states have all the ocean front property...how do i connect?

A road from your capital to any coastal city that you own that has a harbor will establish a connection to all other coastal cities you have with harbors. (a railroad to that first city would be better) And roads from those cities can connect with your other cities.

You need to have a coastal city on the same continent as your capital, linked to your capital by a road. The coastal city must have a harbour and then your cities on other continents will connect to your capital (if they also have a harbour).

If there is nowhere to put a coastal city you probably should just start a new game.

There is always a place for a coastal city. 80% of my cities are coastal.
Hint: build it by the sea. That might help...

Take the CS you built a road to and then build a harbor there and in your capital. That will connect both your cities to your capital.

Not sure what you're actually asking here. But it seems like you might have a city inland, and then another city on the other side of the ocean. Am I correct?
If so, building a road to the ocean won't do anything. You NEED a coastal city on both sides to create a city connection if there's water in the way.

you should b able to get at least 1 coastal city

If you're not able to settle a coastal city, which although very rare is possible, you're going to have to capture one to make your connections.
