One city challenge
which civ would be best suited to the one city challenge i have already ruled out ariba since their "special ability" is having a large empire and taking advantage of trade routes.

Yep, Venice for sure. Can you play it on Archipellago? If so, even better.

Maybe you don't have the DLC then. Are you playing Brave New World?

I'm not sure what One City Challenge is, so maybe you can't do it as Venice.

If you don't have the DLC & BNW - it's well worth getting.

sadly the only dlc i have for the game is the mongols other than that its just the base nations. to turn the one city challenge on you gotta go into advanced setup when you are setting up your game you should see an option called one city challenge limiting you to only one city for the entire game. ( i do intend on getting all the dlc come the xmas sale since that is my main dlc spending spree time )

Ethiopia gets bonuses for the less cities they have

I personally would choose, if you don't have Venice, one of the following Civs:

Ethiopia, due to the combat bonus against Civs with more cities (so you can defend better if you get attacked) and the Stele, which will allow you to get enough faith quick enough to actually found a religion with only one city.

The Aztecs due to their food bonuses (combined with Tradition for a super city).

India as happiness from having a ton of citizens won't ever be a problem.

France I recommend as their capital gets better theming bonuses, but I think their UA is different without DLCs and doesn't help so only if you have DLCs and you want a cultural victory.

Egypt is another option as they're good at spamming wonders quickly which will save you precious production time in your single city (if you're trying to get wonders).

The Inca are an interesting option with their terrace farms if you spawn in a good location. The point with them would be the same as the Aztecs--food.

Like people said, Venice! Also, go for Diplomatic Victory: With the amount of money you'll get with Trade Routes, Diplomatic Victory will be super-easy!

Also, make sure you DON'T buy City-States with Merchants of Venice. I mean, I'm not sure if it will affect the results for the achievement, but why take the chance?

So, you have the base game (vanilla) only... Welll, best one city challenge (OCC) civs are from expansions. Venice is clear winner, like here has been said already and there are about a dozen expansion/DLC civs that are better for OCC than any vanilla civ.

You can play OCC with vanilla civs of course, but there are no clear favourites. Arabia is very good in vanilla, because their Bazaar gives you extra luxury resources for trade. So, more money than with other civs. India is one of the best in vanilla for OCC, because of great growth potential and grassland starting bias, you can grow your capital larger than with other civs. Population si science, so it's most important thing to have good growth in an OCC game. Aztec can work too, if you have enough lakes near capital area and use active military to gain some early culture. Siam is also good, if you like to play with city states. Egypt can also work, if you have enough production and low enough difficulty level that allows you to compete for wonders.

I liked to play OCC back in vanilla, but haven't played it much with expansions. One of my most boring games was a marathon speed OCC game with India. It took over 1300 turns (a week in real time) to win the game and most turns I just clicked next turn and waited computer movements.
