I lose almost zero units, and had a game where I thought I'd lose none - till they managed to get a sub which was mugged by a lot of other stuff, inc bomber.
Continens is pretty hard, but Archipelago is a lot easier, if you get a nice island to yourself, to support 2 or 3 good cities.
I've won all but one game as England. The other was Polynesia on Archipelago. I had a very narrow loss as Arabia on Continents. Lost to Culture, when I was very soon to win by Domination.
Try Archipelago, because not only does it make a Deity Dom win pretty achievable, it's also a hell of a lot of fun.
I can give you some tips if you like?
Archipelago tactic is pretty straight forward:
Start city, and start on a Worker. If you're on your own, you warrior will be able to Scout the whole island.
Find places for other cities, 3 I recon ideal, but 2 OK. Pop 3 or more, and when worker finished, make a setter.
Get your cities up, and get your trade routes going - by sea, for the extra cash. Note: I've twice been on an island with a faith wonder, which has allowed me to get a religion. I had to make a caravan to send food on those occasions. Delete and go ship when City is large enough to support that.
All the usual stuff to max science. NC, quick to Education, specialists in Unis if your Cities can support them, plant a Great Scientist or two.
By the time you research (or steal), but I usually research Navigation, you should have enough cash to buy Frigates/Ships of the Line. 6 minimum, I recon 8 ideal. I do play with Strategic Balance(the only none standard setting I use). Obviously you need 8 iron for that, but you will have 6 min with Stategic Balance. You want a Barracks and an Armoury before you buy them.
Time to go to war. You won't have any Wonders, so hopefully your first conquest will have a nice haul. My advice here, is be patient, and get 'Range' on your ships before attacking his/her cities. Attack Ships, military units, workers, anything so you don't have to heal after attacking a city.
That's 3rd promotion(Targetting>Targetting>Range). Once you have it, you're immune to damage from cities. Take it down, and send in a Privateer to Capture. Repeat when ready.
The worrying time, is when the AI gets Flight before you, and builds Bombers. Go for peace if this happens, but you should have conquered 2 civs by then, if all is going well.
Sit back and consolidate a bit. No more campaigns till you have them upgraded to Battleships, a sub or two, and a Carrier with about 4 fighters(very risky Triplanes, they're crap), you don't want to lose these Ships - ever. You'll get Logistics fairly quick on them, Targetting>Logistics. When they have Logistics and Targetting 3, 8 are worth about 20 AI Ships out of harbour. From here, it's pretty simple. The AI is useless at Naval war.
Take your pick whether you next attack nearby Civs, or one that's getting worryingly in front.
I will reroll for a decent start, but recon I can win this scenario at least 1 out of 2 times(as England).
An Archer in your cities is all you should need on your Island. If you get attacked early, which is quite rare, buy a few Galleass. They should be able to defeat any attack. The AI will still send Land units for you to pick off, instead of focus on Naval war.
I 'always' get attacked - simple as that.
Usually I'll have 4 or 5 Composites when I do, and a couple of Spearmen. I cannot afford to lose the Archers, they will be needed for my first Conquest.
Being attacked is no bad thing - it starts leveling up your Archers, which I want to get Logistick on.
Once I get to Longbowmen(England obvously), I will got to war. Around 8 Longbowmen, will usually be enough to kill any units he sends at you. A few Pikeman will help balance and to defend your Archers where neccessary, and a fast unit to take City when it's health is gone.
Second Conquest will be similar, but often by this time, with naval support - same tactic as on Archipelago.
Even on Continents, my Navy will be responsible for 95% or so of kills. Attack a coastal City, he'll send land units to defend. Your navy will kill them pretty quick. When Navy has logistics, it can move after 2nd shot. You can enter a coastal city, so fire 5 tiles inland - then come out and let another ship in.
Again, Ai can't fight very well, and especially at sea. You kill hundreds of units, and lose none.
You will need a bit more military than Archipelago. Your Longbowmen promote to 2 range Gatlins. You can use in offence, bu they are awesome in defence, on the rare occasion you need that.
That's it really.
PS. I didnt' mention, but Longbommen are all you need to take cities health down, as long as they aren't in the middle of mountans or Jungle. You probably won't need seige units, untill at least Artillery.

I thought I was going to win 3 Archipelago Deity games in a row. In the last game though, Poland was very tough to take, and took me too long. Persia won a Space Race, despite me taking 3 Capitals off him, and was hunting him as quick as I could.
Give you the idea though:
