Civ V, Deity Victory, any way but...
I FINALLY beat Civ V on Deity level. I was Poland, it was an excellent map setup, against AI who for some reason postponed building the same wonders I did. And it was still an absolute bloodbath. Final turn, I was about to get mauled, sold every unit/building I could to bribe the City States, and secured the diplomatic victory.

One question I had... has anyone else ever beaten the game on Deity, using a victory outside of "diplomacy"? I'm not sure it is possible. Your civ is nerfed, the AI "cheats", and so every oppenent you face is infintely ahead on tech, culture, and military might. Even if you manage to get "slightly" ahead, they catch up in an instant, and all your "friends" declare war on you to boot. It was one of the most painful, joyless games of Civ I've ever played (but I HAD TO DO IT).

If you have beaten Civ V on Deity, what was the set up? How did you manage?

Yep.

I'd say around 10 times now(50/50 Archipelago(very good fun) Continents(pretty hard).)

It's quite hard, no doubt about it. I always set out for Domination win, and most of those wins have been as England. I have won on Archiplelago as Kamehameha too. I had a very near loss as Arabia(I know I can win one as Arabia, with Camel Archers - and will have another go sometime). I was extremely dominant in war, but went and lost to Cultrue when there were only a few civs left.

Playing for Domination allows me to switch to other forms of Victory should I so wish. Science win doesn't do much for me, so if for some reason(like the game I'm playing now), I don't want to win Domination, I'll likely switch to Diplomatic.

I played a game as England on Archipelago last game, and enjoyed it so much, immediately started another. 2 games ago, I got all the Capitals and won too early(before anyone had the later techs - my easiest Deity win to date). Ths game got off to slow start, and I didnt' think I'd win. Looks certan I will now, I only need 2 Capitals, but I don't want to take Americas, cos we've been Friends and Allies for a long time. I have about 3/4 City States, Leading World Council(voted in by America bizarrely), and Forbiden Palace. Also a huge income, so Diplomatic should be easy.

On Continents, I try and get a couple of Capitals with Longbows, and Ships of The Line, then wait for Battlesthips and Fighters to protect me. Always my biggest dread, is being at war when someone gets Flight before me, and builds a ton of Bombers. I must have abondoned half a dozen games for that - when I feel I've not made enough progress, was about to, but now the bombers will murder me. A lot of my success comes from very well promoted Battleships. I have 7 in my current game, all with nearly every promotion going. Obviously this is massive on Archipelago, but it's still nearly as good on Continents. With Range, and entering a city, you can fire 5 tiles into a continets. Once you have Logistics, you can enter city, fire twice, come out and let antther ship in.

I had another game, where I had every Capital, except India and Russia, but they'd been great allies in that game - helping me remover the very dominatn Rome from the map. I did go space race there, and just won(I trapped Russias last part).

Congrats on the win btw, it is quite an achievement.

Archipelago makes a Deity win easier to be honest. Not why I do though, I love it cos it's so much fun. This sure looks like being 2 wins in a row. I have many cities puppeted here, but when they are annexed, Gold is around 600 per turn, and happiness around 50.

I would say its not easy but you can win with some T1 civ just like poland.

You can also check out and learn some videos of kasawbon in twitch and He played alot of deity games. (Had average win rate of 70-80%)

I learned so much from watching a guy called Marbozir, and one called FilthyRobot.

Marbozir is great, his commentary is fun - so makes learning very enjoyable. I watched 2 full games, and he won both Domination. One as Germany, and one as Japan.

Best in game Civilization without steam workshop is Sweden, second best Austria. Sweden is REALLY good for growth and late game. ALWAYS pursue diplomatic victory, its the easiest victory possible, science is almost impossible. It all depends on how the player sets up the game. I set it up as HARD as i can, which means 22 players, huge map, quick speed, shuffle map and random leaders. Diplo is best with Sweden, right till now i had no idea how the swedish 10% gp boost was good, but it really is. It allows you to play peacefully and not have wars on deity for the WHOLE game. Reasons: 1st -Swedish starting location - tundra tiles (isolated from most civilizations, best possible spawn for victory as you dont need to focus on unit building). 2- You need to befriend everyone for the boost. 3rd - Others get 10% for themselves, while you get 10% for each friend. 4th - I made defensive pacts with the nearby nations to no worry at all on building ANY units, gives you safety.

The whole game you need to focus on GP production. In my game i had more than 200% boost in gp for my 6 cities. I started with liberty and it has provided me better games than tradition. I however build the monuments. I 1st picked aestethics for the culture bonuses (+33% spawn rate) and accumulated great writers really quick. This is good as you need to gift the gp in order to get the 90 relations bonus and the cultural gp are more often made than the regular ones. Then i went patronage once i was making 200 culture per turn, it gives you lower influence decay and provides science bonus while still keeping the empire happy. For any science victory in deity you will most likely want to go diplomatic victory 1st and have lots of ciy states as allies. I was 1st going for a cultural game but as i acummulated 200 culture per turn i got patronage and from there my science boosted from my small cities from 450 to 800 because of the city states. I however went a bit late on patronage and did not get the diplo victory b4 rome got science victory. But i managed to have 4 diplomats (16 votes from other countries + 28 votes from city states, previous world leader position and world ideology. The total votes needed was 54). Im very confident this is the best civilization for beating deity. Then after having a couple of city states as allies you just ride the growth boost as the bonuses you will get from city states will accomplish previous missions from other city states and soon you will probably get an easy diplo win. And the more allies you have the more science.

As for Austria, go commerce policy, focus on trade routes, buy city states non stop. It allows for huge expansion and provides army (on militaristic and naval) + possibility of domination victory. The worst part is worrying about happiness after annexing 20 + population city and not having culture or luxury resources avaible to trade for (because you already have them all). The purpose for annexing is to grow your empire as much as you can (as if you go 4 cities and tradition path you wont be able to grow them past lvl 30 fast enough and the annexation provides instant population for a cheap price). This growth allows you to have a better chance at science victory. Domination in a 22 player map is almost impossible so i dont reccomend playing agressive, even if everyone goes autocracy you still wont be able to grab a science victory because you will need to have your army protecting every city in your empire and the diplo annexation+ the annexation from wars after you diplo annex makes the AI choose autocracy and have bad relations with you. The AI can be friends with you but because of the expansion he will decleare war on you randomly (and you will have every trade route, yes all the 8 sacked at the same turn and your economy goes into negative). In short, Austrias strategy is probably better for science victory but, since its agressive, it makes the AI go autocracy and you lose track of your friends in the game.

Swedens game is the only one in the past month no AI decleared war on me, even while i was not building ANY units ( i had 2 towns without walls).

Diplo vic is probably the only aim for my game set up but in any other set ups the other victories may be possible.
