Core wood and copper
I can't find any copper (but lots of tin!) in my local BF and where do you get core wood?

Pine trees

You get core wood from pine trees (also located in black forest).

In regards to Copper, just search another patch of black forest. You WILL find some, i promise.

Copper:
look for large round rock mounds low on the ground. With your aim cursor looking down on the mound it will say 'copper deposit'. The ones that don't have copper look the same except the veins in them are colored different.

Fine Wood:
Fine wood is a crafting resource obtained by chopping down Birch and Oak trees in the Meadows or Plains (dangerous) biomes. Unlike Beech and Fir trees, Birch trees require a Bronze axe to chop.

Core Wood:
Chop Pine Trees found in the Black Forest, or grown from Pine cones with a cultivator.
They can be chopped with a Stone axe.

Just an fyi. Copper nodes are ALOT bigger than you think they are.

Dig deep, they are basically a giant oval.

copper looks almost like the mossy big rocks in the black forest but with shiny spots. just check that bug mossy rocks by looking at them. if it says "copper ore" you got one. mark that spot on your map

Invaluable advice. DO NOT immediately mine the copper deposit, you won't see its full volume if you don't dig around the entire deposit first, and you might end up leaving a third to a half behind in the ground because you didn't fully uncover it.

A bronze axe (or better) may be required to chop down a birch or oak tree, but it is not required to fell them in order to obtain finewood.
There are other means for felling these trees...
such as felling those that can be chopped down with a stone axe and then causing the falling trees or rolling logs to cause damage to birch/oak. With sufficient damage, the trees will fall and their logs may be broken.
or luring a troll to cause damage to birch/oak, although this is a lot riskier and may take a lot more time and work to achieve.
Either method will allow you to obtain finewood without requiring bronze.

Thanks for advice about copper but I've chopped pine trees in the BF but they just seem to give ordinary logs like beech?

Pine trees are taller than all the rest, the ones that don't look like traditional Christmas trees

Thank you.

The easiest way to tell fir from pine is the branches. Fir trees have branches that begin much lower, and as mentioned earlier they look like christmas trees. Pines are very tall with bare trunks going WAY up before the branches grow.

Actually the easiest way is to just put your cursor over the tree and it tells you what it is.

Copper is everywhere in the BF, You should have an easier time finding it once you know what to look for. Pro-tip : Take a few stacks of wood with you and build a fence around the entire node before you start mining. You'll get no peace while mining otherwise. Oh yeah and throw down a chest inside the fence. Throw all your stone in the box. Your early game copper mines will become a good source of stone later in the game. And I think someone else said it , but always dig out the entire node before you start breaking it up.
