I also lost bases on one world and yes it sucked. I also lost stuff along the central lattitude which I'd thought would be safe, and I have another base on a different world that now regularly floods but it's an EA game and things change.
The continents were remapped a little and separation between the ashlands and the north from the rest of the world was implemented. It won't need to be done again for the north. It was all done in one fell swoop. Nothing should break apart next update. But again, it's still EA
I've elected to start a new world rather than redo any of the old ones. If I get my focus on I'll enjoy it again and get to try out some new ideas and strategies.
If the enjoyment was based off the idea that he was building something cool that he would be allowed to keep, then the hours were WORSE than wasted because he was effectively wasting his time. The enjoyment he felt while building it is directly proportional to the disappointment and anger he feels when the rug gets pulled out from under him finding out he doesn't actually get to keep any of it.
Protip: Don't build on the shore since waves from storms can eventually break your base anyway.
Build much higher in the elevation and terra-form it like you want. Remember you can only go 11 up or down in terms of elevation though. I build at least 6 above sea level so I can have a moat and a dock for my ships.
The devs told people to move anything in the area in the north and south of the map even said to people to stay on the old build until they had moved anything they wanted to keep before getting the update. I myself have a base just 5 mintues sail from the ashlands and it was left alone, however all the land that connected to the ashlands and the north was removed and only those areas so if you have lost your base it was built in either the bottom or top of the map in the area between the edge biomes and the rest of the world.
Where/how did they tell people?
I don't have an issue with the change, and I might have missed some announcements due to trying to avoid spoilers, but I'm curious how they would communicate that.
I did (possibly) lose one of my cherished mistland tree bases, but it was deep in the old mistland near ashland, so I'm surprised it lasted this long. It might actually still be there, but I lost the portal to it long ago and don't remember the portal name, so I can't check it currently. It's definitely (according to the map) not connected to the mainland anymore.
They said here in this dev post on steam Patch 0.218.9 – Ashlands (Public Test)
In which they give you a link to their preparing for the ashlands page
https://valheim.com/support/getting-ready-for-the-ashlands/
In which it says "Additionally, the Ashlands update features some significant changes to the terrain generation around the Ashlands, and the outer rim of Valheim worlds. The Ashlands will only be accessible by ship, and the terrain around it has been lowered and turned to ocean. This also affects any buildings you might have in that area – if they are built on terrain that gets altered, they will collapse. The images below illustrate what happens to a spawned location versus what happens to a player built structure. As you can see, even if the spawned building remains intact, it will be rather difficult to reach it, as the terrain around it is vastly lower."
They show a player built base collapsing then when asked about these things by players they went on to clarify that players should only update once they had moved anything they wanted to keep out of the area that would be altered by the update. I hadn't played for about 4 months but had kept up with the dev posts so knew on my only world where I had stuff in a at risk area to move it all out over a month before the update was put out.
I built an entire base out to sea just south of spawn all raised out of the sea, during storms my underfloor workbench upgrades room floods but nothing ever gets destroyed. The bases is high enough that storm waves don't get into my base though so just the basement area I don't actually use just hide the work bench upgrades in floods.
The update the OP is upset about is the ashlands one which put a ring on land that joined the ashlands and far north to the rest of the map into the sea thus making the far north and ashlands only accessible via boat. The dev's warned everyone multiple times what would happen to player built structures in these zones and even told players not to update to the ashlands until they had removed anything they wanted to keep from the soon to be affected area's.
But I honestly think the OP should have done what I do which is back up my save after every sessions so if I was the OP and updated without seeing the ashlands preparation guide and lost everything I could just roll the game back delete the save copy over my back up go in take everything of value out then update and not care about a lost base. I mean I have like 9 bases now with my main at spawn and my soon to be mega base taking up an entire large mistlands/plains island.
Just keep back up saves then any issues can be fixed.
Such possibility was the reason I started making videos of my more interesting bases.
Also define not close to the Ashlands? How far North or South were you? If you are in the bottom or top quarter of the map things move. This was a more extreme case of biome update, but you should never go near an unfinished biome. I've kept my main base in towards the centre of the map for this exact reason.
Sorry for your loss, hopefully you have a back up because you can make another copy and try a few times until the new world generation doesn't destroy you
