There is more than one ritual site though, so... if this one can only be reached by having to travel through plains (not likely), then either:
Search for another
or
Search for one on another map seed
By the time you are ready for bonemass you should be able to deal with a few fulings and deathsquitos.
"Mob Boss"
But the absolute first thing once you land should be to build a portal. You can build a platform in one of the big swamp trees with a ladder, and put your portal on that (with a bed & campfire)
I'll check a few more sunken crypts and see if he has a better spawn location. Thanks to everyone.
I tend to drop a portal and leave all my iron in a chest so I don't have to make multiple boat trips back and forth.
I make what armor i can out of the iron I bring back from my initial trip.
Would you mind sharing the seed?
the seed is just used to generate the initial game world, the world you generate is yours and yours alone, on your PC/server, and the only way someone could tamper with your world is if they had access to your PC/server.
As for Bonemass/swamp biomes. keep in mind that there are multiple Bonemass spawn points, and if one feels too tricky to get an established base/portal, then you can always try for another Bonemass location
I would add that you can have multiple world with the same seed, should you wish to do it. Like Crystal_Pistol said, the seed is just the generating info and not the generated world.
I would also add that there is an app that allow to see a blank generated seed map, so one could check out your map without even either creating one or entering/viewing your lived-in one.
P.S. Build during the day..
To answer your original post; bonemass is the swamp boss and will only spawn in that biome, swamp biomes can spawn next to all other biomes although as stated above they always border a body of water
A seed is a code used to generate the structure of your world, sharing the code lets others generate an identical world, but will not in any way give them access to your server or save files
