Valheim

Valheim

why is Dyrnwyn so speical?
just seems like alot of work for something that does about the same amount of damage for a crafted sword

Because it looks really cool!
Seriously, It's more of a trophy than it is a game-changing weapon. The slash damage is decent but the fire damage is there for effect more than actually killing things. If you don't want to use it, hang it on the wall of your mead hall so that all who drink with you will know of your epic feats of heroism!

devs didnt know what to do with the sword and didnt want to waste the model for it. result is this sidetask with building it to hang it on a wall. combat wise its total trash sadly. a sword thats literally on fire nonstop doing less fire dmg than a TORCH is a bad joke. could have atleast given it proper fire dmg instead of 95% phys dmg.

the stormsword and the dual storm axes overshadow it grossly and are easier to get.

if you want it as a trophy and fight the hardest hitting creature in the whole game currently go for it. sadly the miniboss doesnt even respawn and has no trophy. i hope he gets a raid like the hildir ones in the future.

Due to the mythical history for one. The Valheim wiki has a blurb about it, Wikipedia has an article about the thirteen treasures of the Island of Britain (of which the sword is one), and Lloyd Alexander wrote a series (the chronicles of Prydain) targeted towards teens that features the sword as an important component.

The 2nd book in the series, The Black Cauldron, was made into a cartoon movie by Disney that didn't do justice to the series (Disney butchered it to be completely honest).

The series is a good read even for adults. Some of the devs may have read it and decided to include the sword in the game.

Those of us who played in Valheim Alpha way back in 2020 got to play with this sword. The Dyrnwyn is special because was made EXTREMELY early in the game's development and many of us lobbied the devs to give it a proper home.

Here's a screenshot of it from 2020:

Right now it is seriously underwhelming.
If it would do a crapton of firedmg, it still would be weak, but at least it would be very useful in the deep north where presumably they will either weak to fire or at least neutral.
It is a fun sidequest tho, but it definitely needs some love.

I think one of the most useful things about the weapon is that it's basically an infinite torch on top of a weapon that does at least 'decent' damage. Though otherwise...It's a pretty underpowered weapon for the sheer amount of work you have to put in to get it.

Fun fact: The Dyrnwyn counts as warmth when you do not have a cape that provides warmth. That was extremely useful in the early days of the game (see screenshot above from 2020).

Those of us that started the game the week of release eventually found out we could spawn it in , for me after a 1000 or so hours. Well before Mistlands dropped to test.

Smiffe was once on my pivate test server, along with Home. Smiffe brought the flaming sword with him. They would mess with me , once i had to AFK , so they pushed me into the water. this was all before H&H

Oh wow, for real? Honestly that's something that the torch should do, it literally even says in the description of the thing it provides warmth. yet, have torch out at night, still get cold. That's dumb as hell to me.

So Reto is actually harder than main boss - cause after doing him we decided to have a bit of a break before main boss. With what I've read on main boss most/all his attacks are frontal so was thinking someone tanking out front whilst majority hit him from behind. Will need to fine tune plan + talk over with others but if he's not as strong as reto may be a bit easier than we thought

oh, wow... I haven't thought about those books in 40 years... those were so good as a kid (4th grade ish?). I can honestly say those brought me into the whole fantasy reading I have done ever since. Perfect for getting kids into it. I dunno about as an adult, they are, at the end of the day, rather childish in places.

OMG the penny just dropped. I read that series to my kids about a hundred years ago and I couldn't figure out why Drynwyn was familiar but not in a historical way. Thanks so much!

I think its purpose gonna be for the next big update, the Deep North. Proving warmth and dealing fire damage sounds like it would be useful in a cold biome.

if only it actually did. warmth isnt a status effect. he talks about frost resistence. which we have passively on all our cloaks now. so that is not longer a useful effect from a weapon.

and 10 fire dmg. is basically no fire dmg. a torch does 15 fire dmg. the staff of embers does over 100 fire dmg.

so there is no purpose in it neither now nor for deep north. its a generic 95% phys dmg sword. its purely a trophy the devs put in to finally obtain legitly so its not lost in the game code like the trader ship.
