1. If you always approach all caves everywhere in game with the same method you will have way better luck. By that I mean that you always want to go always to the right or always to the left. If you mix this up in the rooms then you will miss crucial areas of loot. In the frost caves you do that plus have to either go from the top to bottom of ea of the areas or bottom to top. And there many times further areas to explore that can only be reached by jumping past the downward staircases on the main entrance level.
2. Watch for slightly shiny walls along the large icy hallways. These can lead to whole new areas to explore. I take a stack of the large bones you get in the swamp crypts and when I am finished with a complex area I throw one down in the doorway as I exit
so I don't end up going around in circles. Trail of crumbs theory.
3. There are several alter styles. Single in an alcove, small alter with center and 2 pedestals and big one with center and 4 pedestals. The really long hangings on ea side of the alters can be shot down by aiming at the top, do this twice to get both pieces from it after removing the 4 or more knotted bits from the bottom. There are also random small wall hangings to just whack. Every ratty door curtain can be removed, every wood door gives wood, &/or iron, every fire gives coal or bronze or both. I have never had a cave take less than 2 full game days to finish. Some take over 3. The caves are way more extensive than they appear at first.
4. Whack all the bones and piles of rubbish around the alters and in alcoves. Have gotten up to 40 draugr meats from them, many bones. So much nicer than sloshing thru the swamps.
5. If you are a bit squishy take the poison bombs and throw them from wood doorways. It wakes up the cultists and puppies and you can kill them from distance. Plus you can see numbers pop up so can tell if there is a large group waiting to pounce on you.
This may sound a bit fussy but by being methodical results are vastly improved. It's so easy to get turned around and miss the major areas of loot.
Happy hunting.
Oh, make the helmet right away. Rest of the gear is meh but the helmet is very nice for the caves.
Also your core need doesn't scale with the number of players in your team.
They are not the same.
The real question is why is it that Fenrings don't drop their hair? Kind of a bummer that they don't even have any real loot.
