Valheim

Valheim

Is Valheim the new Minecraft?
Somehow I can't help but draw parallels between the two...

The huge success upon release, that comes as a surprise to the devs given the sheer magnitude of the sells.

The graphics, which are good, but can't be compared to the current competition of AAA titles, say AssCreed Valhalla (not a charge, it just proves gameplay trumps graphics in the mind of players)

the flurry of mods being made by the hundreds

the impressive and original houses & structures we see published every day

the feeling of endless exploration and freedom (very very huge map)

and probably other parallels ...

I have a way stronger Terraria feel than Minecraft myself but it also really feels like its own thing.

While there are similarities of course, mining, fighting monsters, building etc., Valheim is definately it's own 'thing'. But I don't think this thread is about that. More so that Valheim might become close to, if not as 'big' as Minecraft. And I personally think -like I said- it could well be. If the devs do things right. :)

Really? Where's the automation and logic systems in Valheim?

While yes the map is big (not sure what very very huge amounts to), meaningful exploration is limited once you have hit each biome. So I would not call it endless exploration unless you feel wandering around with nothing more to do a good thing.

No, for one simple reason. All modern computers can run minecraft, most modern computers can run valheim.

Maybe if they actually take the time to fix memory leaks and perfromance issues across the board, but really, even then...no.

I'm pretty sure when Minecraft came out you couldn't run that on old computers still running Windows ME or 2000, which is kinda where computers that can't run Valheim are now in terms of age

You reckon? I'd expect people would find ways to inject basically anything Unity can do - there's already a Diablo style enchanted weapons loot mod.

i think valheim could become a great competitor with minecraft. it has wonderful building mechanics. the fighting is fun for me and is more fluid than minecraft. i think the biggest issue valheim will have is actually the building itself.

valheim has a more realistic building feature and one of the things that keeps minecraft popular is how limitless and far reaching the building is. I think valheim should make a special crafting bench or material that doubles or triples the current building restrictions.

All the love to Minecraft, but you'd really have to work hard to create a less fluid combat system. I'm not convinced 'system' is even a valid word there.

There are definitely similarities between the two, here are a few I can think of:
1) Procedurally generated map
2) Similar programming languages. Minecraft in Java, Valheim in C#, which is just Microsoft's version of Java
3) You can do some terraforming in both (much more of course in Minecraft)
4) At night, some new mobs come out and then despawn when daylight comes
5) There is a progression of weapons and armor you have to follow to get to the end game
6) You can teleport in both, although the way it works is very different
7) Lots of mods
8) I've published a mod in both, but in no other games :steamhappy:

no dood. Mincraft is an infinite lego sandbox in game form. You can do anything in it, you can make other games inside minecraft. Valheim is just a very on trend viking survival game that happened to go big during a pandemic...

I don't have the numbers but it seems like Minecraft's player base has been steadily growing since a decade ago. As a minecraft player myself I play it on and off as there is never a shortage of things to do in the game. With Valheim, however, I notice a lot of players pretty much stop playing after killing Yagluth. This tells me that apart from the building aspect there really isn't much else for most players to stick around for. I'm not bashing the game, just pointing out a weakness in its longevity in its current state. A year from now it could be a completely different game thanks to updates from the devs and modders.

NEVER. ONLY IF THEY RESOLVE THE PROBLEM WITH FPS. OTHERWISE NOPE. WE CANT BUILD HUGE BASE, BECAUSE FPS DROOP DOWN TO 15 FPS LOL
