also... when draw distance is poor... then mob coming close to workbench/etc looks like it's spawning next to it
experienced it few times, for me mob popped out of thin air next to workbench (short draw distance) while my friend saw it for a while already and just ignored it while doing his stuff
Ok...! This could explain a lot of what I'm seeing, then.
Also explains why I haven't had any issues near my bases (as I tend to pepper the landscape with workbenches)
