My first one was a thin strip of plains between two mountains.. I walled off the area totally between the mountains.

The second one I had was a small bit sticking out from black forest and had swamp on the other three sides.. it even had a couple of patches of cloudberries and was very productive.
Dug a small ditch outside the walls just to keep the lox from attempting to get to the stone walls. The swamp even had some crypts to get iron from so it started early as a fully functional outpost even before we had anything to plant there. By the time we beat Modor we had two plus stacks of dark metal and tons of lox meat from the spawns out in front of the farm there.
The base is a shack on a giant Boulder, with only the basics and a portal to the main base. My crops are on the ground with just a stakewall fence around it.
So... You DON'T want advice. If you're just picking based on aesthetics, just do you bud.
I dropped a base on a small island just offshore, and not on a mosquito path, and then did the China thing and built it up. Works perfectly.
And i know too that there in the biome limits fulings gets the attention of other biome mobs
And that was what happened , i found with my friend a very weird plain between biomes , with literally the form of a snake with the head ending in a great lake ( we thought it was sea , a shame ) , so we starting an intermediate base in the snake "head" because is very far away from main bases , a almost perfect hectare with a swamp in the left , a black forest in the right and a mountain skirt above but not so close to spawn dragons or wolves , still fulings in that part , and well , the place is pretty active without benchs everywhere until finish the fort , in the night those green monkees spawn in the corners in large groups ( 4 to 7 ) sometimes with some 1 o 2 stared , wrecking my neighbours haha , mosquitos too , getting the drop is like farming sometimes
No matter the purpose ... base or farm in the plains ... this approach works well.
Any event is easily dealt with, and anything the plains can muster is swept aside with even greater ease.
Best of all, with this method of base defense there is no need for a moat.
