Is there any form of fast travel?

Because so far these maps are looking pretty dang big. I haven't even left the "meadows" biome yet in my world, and there is still quite a lot of distance to cover. Its going to get pretty inconvenient to get back to base if there isn't.

Also is there some penalty for travelling at night? Aside from low visibility I mean.

Portals, yes. Also ships for lugging large quantities of ores.

Night penalty, more mob spawns, and potentially, tougher enemies at night.

Great. Can I make those, or are they POIs? I assume they're late-game items if the former.

You can make them, you'll need to explore the Black Forest a bit (the next biome after Meadows in the progression) and you'll unlock the recipe once you pick up all three required ingredients.

Beech its Birch you also need a bronze not copper (edit) axe

One for the base, one for the grind
Just relog from your base Storage room right on top of the Ore rock
Or you can use mods
Or you make forward bases and produce at least all equipment and transport only the ingots you need for the base

Portals are an inexpensive early game item, which you can make shortly after killing the first boss.

Looks like I have a lot to learn. I've only just made myself some pants, which I thought was pretty impressive. Now I just feel deeply inadequate.
