Valheim

Valheim

Valheim updates everyday / Small download everytime you start Steam
We know it is annoying. The downloads are caused by a Steam setting called 'Shader Pre-Caching' and this has nothing to do with Iron Gate or Valheim in general.

Please refrain from creating new threads on the topic matter!

These small updates are pre-compiled GPU Shader downloads. Shaders help Vulkan and OpenGL games to load faster and improve framerate stability during gameplay.

If you wish to disable this option, just disable Shader Pre-Caching here:
Steam > Settings > Shader Pre-Caching

Updates, or?
For the last few weeks I have noticed small patch/updates, varying in size, from 6mb to 17mb. I would like to have information as to what it is I am downloading, or patching into my files. Thank you for your time.
I was just getting ready to ask the same thing. I get almost daily small patches, with no patch notes. I got 2 today. Curious as to what they are.

Look at the official page for the game. Or the first pinned thread on these forums.

The small patches are Steam, not Valheim. I believe something to do with shaders?
What's downloading?
Everytime I log in to steam, Valheim downloads like 50mb of something. What is it? Anyone know?
I don't think it's Valheim. I think it's Steam.

could you pin this thread?
@Pervy It was pinned before. We'll pin it again if the amount of threads regarding the topic matter increases.

PS: Unfortunately nobody reads pinned threads anyway.

How can a game preload so much and still run like ♥♥♥♥?
To be clear, pre-loading shaders is useful for slower systems that would suffer short framerate drops when creating shaders while playing. Beefier machines also suffer framerate drops when doing that, but the drops tend to be much shorter.

Also, once created, so long as the size of the available cache is large enough to accommodate all the shaders that are needed for every game recently played, a game shouldn't need to recreate the shaders.
Unannounced patches?
So this is the second time Valheim downloads around 100 MB but there are no patchnotes or any sign of an update being shipped. Just wanted to know if this is on my end, and for some reason something had to be redownloaded, or if these are actual patches that go out without any kind of information about them. Anyone can clarify which one it is ?

Edit: Found out there is such a thing as SteamDB which lists all the patches/versions of games and their releases. Apparently the last public patch was the one on December 14th. Makes me even more curious what steam is downloading then...

Edit2: Thanks for merging and clarification, somehow must have missed the pinned thread... I am actually aware that steam does this for certain games, usually its just not 100 mb so I didnt even think of this being the case here

Shader Pre-Caching won't magically upgrade low-spec PCs.
any idea why constant small downloads everyday?
Yes, I'm aware it is not Valheim specific, per se - that it is common redistributables for steam.

But, A) why is it only Valheim then? Have bunch of other steam games that also use that same common redist, but they don't constantly redownload it everyday. They somehow know already have those files and don't redownload constantly

B) Regardless of above, any way to stop this? Not a huge deal given small file size so dload bandwidth not an issue, but it is annoying
Lucky you. I get mini downloads almost every day for Age of Empires II, Age of Wonders Planetfall, Black Skylands, Divinity Original Sins 2, and Don't Starve Together. Aya!
I don’t really understand it. Why does it need to re-cache shaders if they’re the same thing in the same place on your hard drive every day?
