Seriously though, this does need to be a feature. Ideally with a set of filters for things we do and do not want to pick up automatically.
It might not be as nice as you think.
Would make mining for example nicer when you could filter out rocks if you want. Makes sense too since I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be picking up everything either if you were mining, you'd pick and choose and a filter would represent that nicely.
For example if you only want to collect wood, split stacks of wood in your inventory until you have one wood (not a stack of wood - one wood) in each space. That way you'll only collect wood and nothing else. Want to pick up leather scraps, deer leather, resin, and wood? Put one of each of these in a few slots until your inventory has one item only in each slot then that's all you will pick up until each stack is full.
Of course if you don't already have at least one of something you may want this does prevent you from picking it up so you end up having to pay more attention to drops and manually clear a space if something you want drops and it's not one of your selected items. Not perfect, I know. A filter would be better, but this could be somewhat useful if all you want is wood and core wood while out chopping, or you want to fight grey dwarves and only want to collect dwarf eyes and those green seeds but no resin, stone, wood.
I can't say that a filter wouldn't be a good QoL feature for a lot of us but I don't mind tossing stacks of stuff I don't want. Takes a couple seconds at most and it's really not a big deal.
Anyway, adding a toggle auto pickup would be fine by me but I would never, ever, turn it off. I love the fact that I don't need to hit or hold E to pick up item drops from enemies. I also like that it's a one quick tap of E to pick stuff up instead of that tired old "hold the button for 2 seconds" console controller system a lot of games seem to like.,
Boom. Item filter. That's what they mean.
Grim Dawn does it by rarity, which manages it by lumping like rarity into filtered blocks. Filter by biome "might" work as a similar option.
