since then when i start a new game i just go in mountains, kill 2 wolfes and pretend i tamed one
Then i spawn a unbuggy one in my base
Babies born get their spawn point set to where they are born, so they don't have this issue.
If you go back to the areas you had first found and loured your animals from, you're going to find your tames. I thought I lost my wolf pack after I loured, trapped and tamed the lot, with a two star included. They all followed me to base and than POOF, vanished... I later went back to where I found them and almost killed them thinking they were new wilds that spawned. Until after killing a few I noticed the tame and ability to pet them...
..........yeah.
kid always gets stars of the "mother" (no male/female there so I mean the one giving birth)
night-only creatures despawn during day when they are 40m away from player
during day they also try to escape 40m away from player to despawn
so not only you need to be close, but you also have to lock them so they don't escape :/
It's pain in the butt

That post is mostly right but for the de-spawn vanishing thing. That's due to the AI issue I mentioned. If I can re-encounter my wolf pack I tamed after they 'vanished' several game days later then yeah. Plus I seen a boar glitch though my wall after fresh tame and watched it beeline back to where it spawned. To this day, almost 200 day's sense it escaped... its still free roaming back where it had spawned. I give it a pet every time I walk past.
I have found that telling wolves to "stay" sets their "patrol route" to the point where they stand currently
So they circle in this place (maybe it will override the whole return to spawn thingie? I'm assuming that this whole "return to spawn" is actually just patrol route of wolf :D in case of other pets... restart of game should change their patrol route since it's not saved anywhere)
if this "return to spawn" is a thing then I guess it would happen only when there is no day for night wolves
during the day their AI takes escaping and despawning as priority, they just try to do whatever they can just to despawn

Long story short. you cant move away for ~3 in game nights. They need to not be aggro'd as much as possible. Then you have to breed it and the offspring has to be a 2 star wolf (which can breed with a non star wolf).
Which means you had to have a breeding pen ready. To make things worse it will try to run away to despawn during the day.
-Honestly I suspect they put in 2 star wolves with the intent that people would not be able to tame them.
I don't think they want you taming 2 star wolves but I could be wrong. It makes the game silly and easy. You can transport wolves to other continents via Harpoon dragging. Once there you can spread them and make them crush all wildlife except flying enemies.
For good reasons
if they don't fix it anytime soon... then I guess it's intentional to despawn them :D
To be fairly fair ... When 5-Star Wolves appear, then I'd agree that 2-Star needs work, otherwise it's a downward spiral for taming.
To get the best, should we nerf the best so anyone can get one?
unless you mean command spawned ones :D
I didn't try it~~
But north pole is just no different than any mountain?
I had thoughts that those mountains offer a higher tier spawn, I have no evidence because i haven't traveled that far north ... :(
It crossed my mind for the future. I think the time you've trained a 2-Star could have been better spent if we could train them to level up (time or combat or whatever).
Another question .... Do they despawn while training simply because it's night or is there a certain amount of acclamation before it coverts to the players "religion" (so to speak). I know you've mention another thread that asks, I followed your grinding report (+ 1 for you work).
Wolves spawned at night that are 1 or 2 star will poof if you go too far away (somewhere between 12-20 tiles).
