Better to build a moat or a wooden fence?
Thoughts?

Trench of course. AI is too limited to traverse it (except flying enemies), and it does not need any materials or maintenance. It is the optimal defense in most scenarios.
A big moat is not advisable, because it's unnecessary effort and it comes with more instances, which can cause performance issues.

Both

So honestly the best thing to do is a combo of 4 things.

First build an earthworks (raised earth), then build a pit in front of it. ideally wide enough that a troll can swing a log across it. Then on top of the earthwork build a Palisade. At the bottom of the pit put spikes.

This is the process I have used... With one exception at one corner of my farm stead... my base is troll proof. and I can literally just ignore their attacks.

Drakes and Fulings are about the only things I will eventually have to worry about as Fulings hit like a brick and if they were to ever attack a gate house they might actually break through.

Right now.. swamp attacks I don't bother even looking at them. I just keep doing what I'm doing.

As it happens this is the same systems the Romans used.

That is not true about only getting dwarves/greylings. The meadows will get endgame enemy attacking your base once you defeat higher level bosses. These attacks are scripted events, not the wandering monsters you get more frequently.

Now stack benches to cover all parts of the island where a mobs could spawn, wait for the queue spawning mech to end and you ll be safe from every mobs and raid.

Could Build a wall with Raised Ground instead of a Moat. Raise Ground about 4m or 5m and build a wall on it or around it.

Having tried wall, moat, and wall with moat, what I like best about the moat (alone) is you can just jump across to get in & out of base - don't have to bother finding or opening/closing a door.

I have the walls, moat, and spikes. None of it matters because they spawn inside my base during an event. DON"T bother and save your fps.
Landorf 17. mars 2021 kl. 10.48
Events, man. When four trolls pay a visit to your meadows settlement, it's pain...
And fire guys can burn it to the ground awsell. They attack structures even if you inside.

I ve never seen em spawning within the walls, however. May be. my base is too small...

a wooden fence (or even 2x tall stone wall) will be more than enough for dwarves, swamp folk and skellingtons if you hunker down and keep repairing it, but stopping Trolls will take a moat, and a pretty deep one with almost vertical walls.

also, planting an entire forest's worth of wooden poles with troll heads on em all around the base has proven ineffective at discouraging them :(
Nice

Build on a tiny island out at sea. The very ocean will be your moat :D Nothing will spawn, not even during raids.

I always used moats and palisades, depends on the location. Havn't gotten any interesting enemy raids, i live in the plains and only getting skelleton surprises or surtlings.
wildbill 17. mars 2021 kl. 16.24
Yes, both. You place the wall to get the straight line (best is north/south or east/west for the most tidy looking trench). Then you have a reference point for digging the moat in a straight line.
