You also move faster with the knife out than with any other weapon so you can still run up on those deer.
Many enemies will be weak to the club's blunt damage.
Trying to sneak through the swamp would be painfully frustrating, and several of the enemies (including the boss) are weak vs clubs. Plus the bronze mace has a devastating power attack that can 1-shot kill blobs... So yeah, I'd say go mace.
I stuck with an upgraded club for quite a while until I switched up to a mace. If you're ready for the swamp then make sure you have a bronze pick and a blunt weapon. I agree that the secondary mace attack is helpful for taking down blobs with one swing, but if you're ready to hit the swamp it might be worth skipping a bronze mace and going for iron instead. I'm in the mountains and occasionally go to the plains and the iron mace is still working fairly well for me.
A green sword at 95 damage x3 is more than a green knife at 18 damage x10. By 50%.
