Boat on a shore
How to keep any boat near the shore: attach it? build a marina?

When everyone steps off the boat it should stay in place. The issue is waves, especially big ones during a storm. These raise/lower the boat, and if there are rocks underneath, can damage/move the boat.

Bring boat to stop. Get out. Waves don't move the boat except up/down. Make sure to park somewhere that's deep enough for boat to be safe from damage.

... or park it in an inlet further in from the shoreline, like an estuary, so that there are no waves ;)

Thanks for the replies. Yes it was a storm and big waves... I'll try to pick up a better spot.

Here's another solution:

There's really no need to keep the boat around when it's not in use. Park the boat in shallow water on shore, stand on the boat and hit the mast until the boat breaks apart. The crafting materials used will drop (hence make sure this is on shallow water). Collect the mats and rebuild the boat when it's needed.

This is also another way to 'portal' the boat.

Never floated off on me, but I've returned to find it destroyed a few times.
Awesome idea butt stallion!
What I usually do is drop a workbench, drop a chest, break down the boat and leave it folded up in the chest. Works perfectly to keep the boat safe.

But building a small pier to leave it floating is prettier.
Unfortunately there's no way to tie the boat down yet, so I guess walling it in will do for now.

Boats have momentum, but only as long as someone is aboard. What works well for me is to slow down to a paddle when I'm trying to park precisely, align, and let go of the rudder. I stand up and wait for the boat's momentum to carry it into position, then I jump off. The boat stops instantly and it's exactly in the right spot.

I parallel park mine close to the shore and leave it. Haven’t lost a boat yet.
