the game story is horrible while the anime story is masterpiece
other stuff are good you can check my review for full detail
dunno just started
i will update my review with the progress
This is the first time I ever saw adaptation to be 2 levels above its source materail. Anime builds up whole VR world reveal with several episodes showing all main characters and how they break one by one. MC has an actual personality and not best warrior who gets the gun first aka every persona game.
Man for now game story is such dissapoitment of half assed dialogs and non existant characters.
The MC gets a personality but his personality was annoying, so I consider that a wash. It made me really grateful for the new female option since the anime ruined him for me. But its a given that an anime has to ruin a customizable main character.
As for spoilers it ruins things like who people are behind their avatars, that sort of thing. As you generally play a game much longer than watching an anime, Its good to keep surprises.
Personally, I feel most Anime based on video games are done for people who've already played the game. They tend to be a bit terrible on their own since they try to shoehorn game mechanics in without really explaining anything. They count too much on gamer knowledge.
A good recent example is Persona 5. Gorgeous anime, and if you loved the game you'll have fun watching it. But if you haven't played the game it was largely unintelligible. Caligula wasn't quite that bad since it wisely chose not to follow the game plot. But I still think its more enjoyable when you have the game to compare it to.
Long story short, I feel its always best to watch an anime adaptation after playing, unless its specifically a prequel.
Caligula anime improved the story while still having enough action
