Why is this game not open-world?
A or B?

A) Because this is the classic style of Bioshock which fans love, and making it open-world does not make anything better, so go play Skyrim.

B) Because option A is complete insulting BS, and the real reason is that console-oriented development locked in the requirements.

more like an interavtive visual novel than a world of its own.

I don't think that's true at all. Things don't have to be open world to define themselves as a world. Books and movies all both follow a linear path, and don't let you explore the world at all by your own free-will (excluding choose your own adventure stories). Bioshock Infinite lets you explore a bit, and gives you tons of extra narrative, like the Voxaphones. It isn't open world, but I would argue it has a more well defined world than any other game I've played this generation, second only to the original Bioshock (for me).
On the topic of books being worlds, diskworld (Is that what is callled? Never read any of them) are books, and still very very much there own world.

Never read any books? yeah, that figures.

Aaaaanyhooo. The whole lack of choice, linearity, whatever you want to call it thing, actually fits in with the narrative that infinite sets up around fate, the inneffectiveness of certain choices, and so on.

I never felt like I was playing a linear shooter, because there's several different ways of attacking the same fight. rush in, keep your distance, blast around on skyhooks and so on.
In something like COD, the game is literally on rails, every situation must ultimately be done in (more or less) the way the programmers specified. That's where this modern accusation of linearity in games comes from, and to apply it to infinite is to misunderstand the original issue.

I hate open world games. 30% of the gameplay is traveling by foot car horse what ever. (ok there is fast travel in some) I just hate traveling....

Traveling? Or ADVENTURING!

To be honest, I would probably not have bought the game in the first place if it was truly an open world game. Open world games have more content, yeah, but they're also much less focused and the quality of the game is lower per area (in my opinion). The only exception to this I've seen is morrowind, but I'm not expecting to see a game like that released anytime soon.

What? You do realise that almost every single open-world game made in the past 10 years have had console releases. Games consoles have many limitations, but this isn't really one of them. This is you hating on consoles just because you think it's the 'in' thing.

I dunno... I'm kinda Meh about Open Worlds... for me, Dragon Age is about as open a world as I would enjoy... where you can choose which major plotpoints to tackle in what order, but there's only so much leeway as to how to get things done... things like Skyrim are just too much like a single player MMORPG for me... and I have never liked MMORPGs
I gonna agree with this guy. It is indeed more realistic when you get to make choices and all but a game is a game, and when you get to choose the path and the story changes completely from these choices it`s kind`a annoying cuz you`ll wanna find out the other versions and stories behind the game, so you`ll have to play it over and over making different choices.

The real reason why Bioshock Infinite isn't open world - walk too far and you'll fall off the city and die. How could u not see this logic OP?

It would awesome if this game will be open world game because this game is too linear right now

The design team decides what is right for the game. It's really impossible to argue with it, because it's their decision at the end of the day, not ours. Sometimes designers get it wrong. In this particular instance, I think they did not. For a game whose design seems so focused on the pacing and structure of the narrative, it's difficult to imagine it being any other way. Even BioWare games, in spite of their generally masterful storytelling, lack a sense of urgency and immediacy at times, and their games aren't even all that open, when compared to something like TES.

It's meant to be linear >< Linearity is totally fine, and makes sense for Infinites narrative.

A) They told the story that they wanted to.

Also I have not gotten very far but can you not explore previous areas?
Vito 25 ABR 2013 a las 4:36 p. m.
It would be in development for another 2-3 years if it was to be open worlded.
Or it would be glitchy and unpolished as fallout 3.
It would be cool if it was semi open worlded like Dishonored, and some levels actually are (Downtown Emporia for instance) but it's okay the way it is.

D) Because somebody spent 90% of budget on advertising and art, and forgot to develop actual gameplay, and when they started actually developing the gameplay it was too late to do anything but plain stupid linear shooter in Call of Duty YOBA (youth oriented brainless approved) style.

Ah yes, the person that thinks just because a few hate it, clearly no one spent anytime develping the game, and all the money was wasted on a very small ad campaign (I've litterally only seen 3 ads for it, all exactly the same)
