Barb. inv. with Christian Western Roman Empire is probs my favorite campaign of all Total Wars up to Rome 2. It was interesting and challenging, really gave a feeling of a big struggle Rome had.
Demolish pagan temples and build Christian churches. I don't remember anymore the exact minute details, but I think it was enough to conquer them so that they did not anymore spread paganism as a different country to your lands.
Edit: And I am talking about Spain here, it was the most troublesome pagan area.
I don't remember how it was exactly, like was there a difference if a neighboring province was a pagan state owned by your enemy or a province you own but which have paganism major. I think there was a difference in that if you rule the neighboring province it wont spread paganism even if it majors paganism.
There should be a tooltip on the province detail screen at the religion percentage, which gives you all the factors affecting the religion in that province.
Governor and priests affect religion big time too. Use your priests.
Okay, your playing one of the hardest campaigns in the game. More than half of the western empire in pagan. As the Western Romans, your not just at war with other factions, but with your own people.
Here's the facts:
(1) Your not going to have a peaceful transition to Christianity from paganism.
(2) Provinces are going to rebel against you.
So here's some ideas on strategy.
(1) Don't try to convert the province to Christianity and hold them. Wait till you know an outside faction( Pagans) are going to attack and take the city. THEN, build a christian church. The population will now be hostile to the pagan faction that took it. It will be very hard for them to hold onto to it. In other words, give the problem to them. Then, at the right time, retake the city, and slaughter the inhabitants. The idea being, it will slow down the pagan faction's advance cause now they have the problem of trying to hold it. If they only plunder the city, then come back and retake it, and slaughter the inhabitants.
(2) When you know your going to give up a city, tear down every building you can. Make the enemy build his own buildings. Strip it as bear as you can. Scorch the earth.
(3) Using spies to spread disease is a great tactic to use against enemies.
Now it's possible that the pagan faction might destroy the christian church and build a pagan shrine. Sometimes they do, but sometimes they don't.
It's a hard faction to win with; ( Western Romans).
BUT, if you cannot find a way out of a situation, then find a way further in.
No matter how you play it, you will very likely have to murder half of your population.
Yes, in the remastered, rebels from foreign religions tear down your "wrong" temples.
My solution to spread your religion:
When recruiting, agents have a 50% chance of getting a trait with a 5% conversion to your religion.
Simply recruit 10 cheap diplomats. 5 of them have the 5% conversion bonus. That's a total of 25% to your religion. Use them as missionaries and your religion will spread very quickly
