A question about gladiators and arcani
What is their purpose? AIght they got perfect morale and 2 hitpoints however they take 2 turns to produce and they have 1/3rd of the unity numbers making them very easy to circle. Is their any reason to produce arcani or gladiators instead of lets say, Urban Cohorts or even Praetorian Cohorts?

Arcani can be useful is surprise attacks since they can hide anywhere - place front line further back with arcani infront off to the side. Was they attack, the arcani can jump in and impact morel.
But tbh, cav do this way better and easier... But cost more for decent ones

Ngl I never paid attention to the surprise mechanic. I guess it affects morale?

Yeah it can. Sometimes cause mass routes if the timing is there.
But easier just to mash cav into the flanks tbh

Maybe they would be useful to make a challenge run revolving around them.

It's not that the "surprise factor" affects morale, but that the effect on morale from flanking is very strong in this game.

They were gimmick units to add spice to the game.
Also remember that units that are hiding are completely invisible to the AI. Even if the AI saw them go into hiding, the AI acts like they don't even exist.

Hmm. I wonder if Arcani can hide in Cities. That could be useful during sieges.

Just run up a bunch of Arcani. Then when the enemy walks past them and fights your main force, use the Arcani to get behind them.

I don't know if this would be more effective than just running Cavalry around the city until they find their way behind the enemy, but it's worth a shot.

This is incorrect.

High HP units are really good on walls. especially defending.

You know funny that, I actually tried this strategy on Medieval 2 with the Hassassin unit which is basically the Arcani but for Medieval 2 as far as I know and it worked perfectly. I tried it with the Arcani in Rome 1 remastered and it just didn't work. They broke immediately. I am not sure what is up there.

They are obviously not made to engage with the frontline. They are better for flanking. Especially the Arcani. Once you have the Arcani unlocked there really is no point in the Gladiators since they do a much better job flanking due to their ability to hide. Since the Gladiators can't hide well and don't have shields they can get pelted by ranged fire quite easily.

And flanking in Rome and Rome Remastered is huge. It impacts morale a ♥♥♥♥ ton and can easily turn a fight from a losing one to a winning one and vice versa. It's probably the best thing you can pull off and the scariest thing to deal with if you make a mistake.
