Barbarian Generals - OMG
Wow. Early game playing as Romans on VH difficulty and a Gaul general's bodyguard can cut through more than 6 of my hastatti units like a knife through butter. Throwing 5000 spears at the general's unit does absolutely nothing to him. How on earth are you supposed to beat this incredible unit?

Use your own general's bodyguard. There are broken in the same way.

god, dont remind me.

been playing a lot of shogun 2 recently so it feels very weird to suddenly not be able to general snipe.

there is no way general's cav should be able to charge face first into a phalanx and take no casualties

I know right, but thats mostly due to their 2 Hit points that they have compared to regular cav or inf, and the General himself always takes more hits than any other unit almost like an Elephant xD. Also remember that when you're playing campaign you can have a general trait (called "scarred"?) which can give him even more hitpoints and adds up to the base of 2.

For a reason they called them Jedi Generals back then :D.

Barabrians are lots of fun. Just make sure you melee Romans in close battle engaged with your own first.

Anything less than VH is too easy and boring though.

Finally won but it was brutal. Had to sacrifice charge a unit of equites and then hit the general's bodyguard with my own general. My faction leader barely survived!

OG total war generals are made of steel, unlike later games where they are made out of some kind of soft cheese.

Hastati are not equipped to deal with cavalry. I mean, historically they kind of were (pila were occasionally used as conventional spears), but not in this game. A volley of pila should be devastating to a cavalry unit, but it depends a bit on aim as well. You need spearmen.

In before the Western Roman Empire BI Campaign on the hardest difficulty.
