It's been a thing since the original Rome so I doubt it's getting changed

They appear in the slave revolts (gladiator uprising) when Roman cities have an Arena, Amphitheater or Coliseum building. no glitch that i know of that transforms elephants.
I did not know that they appear naturally, I just knew that very sparsely people have talked about them showing up. My mistake

Yeah but we don't want them 'fixing' whatever bug is in game causing them to actually show up >: ]

Huh interesting ive put countless hours into the original and never came across them might have something to do with the difficulty setting as well since im playing on very hard/very hard. this is the army they spawned in when they rebelled https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2496778807

in the very original version of the game, eastern rebel armies especially in the steppes would spawn Yubtseb elephants; it was fun realising that they were cheat elephants and working out how to make them :)
they'd got patched out of appearing by the BI update, but it's actually quite refreshing to see them running amok in the remaster - i missed them :)

Coming back to this, like the other guy said before me they're apparently not a glitch at all but were rather a promotional thing with Best Buy when the game first came out. Hence their name "Yubtseb elephants"

They spawn under very specific circumstances from what I understand

one time I came across an rebel army with 6 Amazon units and tried to bribe them. As of yet I have never came across another Amazon unit ever and Im sad.

Edit: I did not get to keep the Amazon units and I never got to see them in battle didn't even have a save on it I was so mad.

Sounds like the hidden settlement Themyskira tucked away on the centre forest of the northern edge of the map (directly above Campus Sarmatae). Full of Amazonian fighters, chariots, women on top of the obvious reference in the name. Very out of the way as you can only access it through multiple fjords through the western forest.

The rebels around there are crazy-aggressive as well, and I found that they were very revolt-happy even after a double-round of extermination. Only wanted it for the world conquest achievement!

Yeah I for sure encountered those in the original game. Think they spawned once when I had a rebellion in Sicily. Technically easier to kill than other elephants since they are bigger targets lol. I remember that their unit description was pretty amusing. Anyway here is a screenshot of them appearing in the original game: https://live.staticflickr.com/3228/3005925866_f81a10c314_o.jpg

i have thousands of hours in the classic RTW (dunno how many, this was long before Steam kept tabs for us), unpatched retail version on hardcopy, and I have never had those elephants spawn. I only played RTW vanilla, didn't own BI or Alexander back then. I have played every faction (except Parthia, they are so.. bland) numerous times on all difficulty settings so I assume I should have seen them if they had spawned.

I'm european though, bestbuy sounds very american. Could it be different version for europe vs NA perhaps? Not that it matters now 17 years later, hehe.. but I am just curious.

Nope, had those in my European version. You just missed out. Well revolts are not very common, I usually do not get those in my campaign. So probably how you missed out. I only seen them once in all my playthroughs after all.

Anyway, if you open your exprot_descr_unit file in your original Rome 1 you can easily find them there.

Spawned by Oliphaunt cheat code in console. These should not spawn naturally at all.

Not true, they could spawn as rebels. I think that code spawned a friendly one rather, but never tried it.

Ive gone back into an old campaign from my original disc version to try and replicate this and they do in fact spawn in rebel armies from well built up settlements also recently in my current campaign ive seen some rare units rewarded by the senate.

Mercenary Elephants are common
I've never seen the "Giant building sized Elephants" on the original Rome total war.
Neither CD nor Steam versions.
I've beaten almost every faction's imperial campaign. and even timed out the years before.
(Rome, Egypt, Carthage, Numidia, and Macedonians on CD version, same and rest on steam version).

If they could spawn on those versions I would have seen at least one unit.
+1000 Rebel towns slaughtered.
